Season 1 overview: It very easy to say that 1st season was dreadful. With 3.31 as average rating it outruned even VOY "impressive results" and now officially hold the title "The Worst Trek season ever". During watching it I thought many times that last 20 years Rodenberry slept somewhere in the deep cave and miss everything that happen in sci-fi genre and how it changed from 1969. Disgracefully bad scripts, dull long and boring dialogs, no action at all, no space battle and absolutely archaic approach - this are the most notable qualities of the 1st season of the show. Among other thing scriptwriters barely use half of the characters like for example Worf or La Forge which sometimes just walked on the bridge without any purpose.ANd in the same time in EACH episode Enterprise had NEW chief engineer. Another big problem of the show - Wesley Crusher. THis awful, pathetic and annoying character without any intersting personality or skill managed to save more then few times and took a significant part of screen time which could be spend with much more benefit. And these ugly sweaters of his... From few positive moments - Data is a very amusing and in the same time interesting character ( I hope writers wouldn't screw him up), Patrick Stuart did very good job portrayting Picard but his character didn't touch me at all  , I don't know why, I suppose because Picard as a person not really interesting. But funny thing despite my strong hostility toward Riker after TATV, here in TNG he amuses me( even if Jonathan Frakes didn't really do anything speacial) but I still can't accept him without beard. But what I really liked with 1st officer and captain despite the fact that Riker is 100% sidekick he didn't inferior toward Picard. If captain in trouble he will safe him, if captain possessed by something he will stop him, if Picard leave him in charge he will not screw it up. Well at least something that Roddenbery prorerly. THe next season would be better I hope... And damn, he must fire all his scriptwriters! Edited by sipovic, 28 Feb 2009, 12:59.

If I remember correctly, the main reason for these horrid scripts weren't the script writers per se, but the lack of script writers. For a long while there was some Hollywood strike and they had to recycle old scripts from way back that was originally written for the aborted Star Trek: Phase II attempt in the late 70s. After the original Star Wars movie in 1977, they decided to make a Star Trek movie instead of a new TV series. That movie became Star Trek. The Motion Picture. So when TNG came around they used a lot of the ideas from Phase II, down to the characters of Riker and Troi, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Will Decker and Ilia from TMP. |

Well it explains pathetic and morally outdated scripts. The question is when thing will improve? 2x01 The Child Well, it looks like that writers strike still went on during start of 2nd season :'( ... The plot was awkwardly awful. Some entity enters Deanny Troi and she gave birth to child who grew very fast, everybody is understanding that something wrong but do nothing and eventually he left us entity. And that practically all. It hard to even imagine a script worse than this for start of new season. But there was a thing which stunned me even more. I didn't know what possessed producers to change an average but at least aestheticly pleasing Dr.Crusher on Dr. Pulanski with charisma above zero and nasty personality which makes Catheryn Janeway looks like nun. I think I'll never knew the reason for this. Well at least she wasn't in main cast so I hope I would be forced to stand her for too long. Another absolutely mysterious addition to the crew is Guinan. I couldn't tell anything about her now since she didn't do anything except few talks but something tells me that she wouldn't be my favorite Trek-bartender. From positive sides - Riker finally got his beard, La Forge became chief engineer, O'Brien returned. Ship decorations improved significantly (especially hangar). At least Roddenberry improved some of his mistakes. Too bad it practically had nothing to do with the quality of this particular episode. 1/10 Posted Image 2x02 Where Silence Has Lease Another dissappointing episode. I didn't get why it was necessary to build a suspence for 20 minutes just to reveal a god-like alien ("tm" sign I suppose in order here) with motivation "because I can"(I wonder does god-like aliens have any other kind of motivation? ). And the way how Picard forced him to release the ship by threating of self-destructing wasn't believable, since such strong entity could easily turn self-destruct off. I noticed btw that in this episode everybody adressed to O'brien as lieutenant and he 2 nods on his uniform. 3/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x03 Elementary, Dear Data Finally a normal episode. Brent Spiner created a charming combination of Sherlock Holms and android and it was great especially in the first part of episode when Data solved crimes before holo-characters begun to speak or create a Conan Doyle-style plot from the elements of his stories. :guffaw: But the second part of the story when Mariarti gain consciousness was not so charming even if an actor which played villain did a good. But it became a usual a variation of "holodeck mulfunction". And I found very doubtful Picard decision to keep "evil hologram who can defeat Data" alive and saved. I think for obvious security reasons such hologram must be destroyed. Still this episode made a positive impression on me. 6/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image Edited by sipovic, 1 Mar 2009, 14:42.

2x04 The Outrageous Okona It would be more right to call this episode "The Outrageous Crap"! Okona as a character was one big "Han Solo-style" cliché. He was boring and predictable and all plot with two races tried to get custody over him cause he stole a diamond from one and made a baby to governor daughter to other was as one big annoying farce. :banghead: THe only more or less watchable part of episode was Data quest to understood humor with Guinan assistance. And even if it had a few nice moments it absolutely didn't save this episode. 1/10 Posted Image 2x05 Loud as a Whisper Another wasted hour. I even for a second couldn't take seriously a deaf negotiator with a chorus. THe story itself was utterly slow and uninteresting and it looked liked nobody was really worried about it. And final decision Riva to continue negotiation without his chorus looked absolutely insane. I think that for 2 barely civilized races who 5 minutes before was killing each other it would be a little difficult to speak with deaf negotiator without ability to understand him. 1/10 Posted Image 2x06 The Schizoid Man I really liked this episode. And even if plot was pretty average a wonderful work of actors moved total quality above average. With only 10 screen minutes William Morgan Sheppard ( father of wonderful british actor Mark Sheppard and trek veteran: ST VI - undiscovered country, VOY nice episode "Bliss" as obssessed captain and he WILL BE in new JJ Abrahams ST movie :worthy: ) created a wonderful character of briliant, arrogant and excentrique Dr. Ira Graves who is dying. He was so good that had chemistry with everybody who talked too him. And their scenes between Data and "grandpa" :guffaw: (as he told to call him) was the best. And when Graves put his conscience into Data, Brent Spiner really absorbed and represented the same character pretty good and his way from struggling to accepting that he couldn't live as android. This episode also had another notable guest star as not too much talky but pretty hot Vulcan Doctor Lt. Selar (played by Suzie Plakson - Q female from VOY and andorian Tarah from ENT "Cease Fire"). Oh, and I almost forgot a hillarious scene in teaser where Data wears beard :cookiemonster:  ( he looked cool with it by the way). I honestly wish that TNG had more episodes like this. If they had problems with scripts they at least could compensate it with great acting. 7/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image |

2x07 Unnatural Selection The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the USS Lantree, and find her crew dead, apparently from old age. The investigation leads them to a research station on Gagarin IV, where Pulaski and the station's staff undergo rapid aging from genetically enhanced children. This episode supposed to help to develop Dr Pulanski as character but instead it only increase my enmity for her . First of all, both her decisions to bring allegedly healthy children on board and later to teleport herself to one of them was irrational as minimum and absolutely unprofessional. And her manner to not listen what Picard told her and her constant interruptions was really annoying. And the technobabble to cure a desease which was called " uncureable" just 5 minutes before" was too unbelievable. Adding to this the using of one of my most hated sci-fi clishes (instant aging, brrr just hate it! :yuck: ) and total slowness of episode force me to give 3/10 as maximum. THe only thing I liked was the fact that O'Brien (which was adressed by everybody as "chief" this time) who saved the day. Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x08 A Matter of Honor Commander Riker is assigned to the Klingon vessel and his loyalties are put to the test when the Klingon think the Enterprise caused the problem and then plan to attack the Enterprise. It was really good episode. So far I liked all TNG klingon episodes. And this one gave a great push to Riker as character. I must admit that after this episode my level of respect to Riker character went a little higher. First of all I liked that he honestly told Picard that he want this assigment not because some abstract desire to new more about other cultures but because nobody have done it before. I really like when characters shows that they have some other motives (or ambitions in this case)which are similar to normal people and not just their "Perfect Officer" mode. And second his actions on board Klingon ship was just examplary, beginning from how he beat up klingon officer (played by Brian Thompson btw) for insubordination and how he avoided and acted in dangerous situations with both both klingon food and klingon women and of course how he tricked Klingon captain to beam him up on Enterprise bridge, took captain chair and demand surrender from Picard avoiding battle this way(which is a little pity but I can live with that). Another thing which pleased me that Klingons was shown not just agressive idiots just searching for excuse for die but as adequate people (just with different culture). Even the guy which was beaten by Riker acted pretty adequately later and have a nice converstaion with other klingons about his families and their values. It was the best episode so far. 8/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image |

2x09 The Measure of a Man When Data resigns his commission rather than be dismantled for examination by an inadequately skilled scientist, a formal hearing is convened to determine whether Data is considered property without rights or is a sentient being. Mostly this episode made me feel angry. The level of hypocrisy of Starfleet in this episode was simply unbeilevable. How it is possible to look for lifeforms everywhere but not count their own officer as one? How it is possible to allow someone who they didn't count as life form to get a rank of lt.-commander? I understand the need of writers to identify Data not just a machine for audience but they used the worst way to do it. I liked the argument itself between Riker and Picard in court (I again was pleased that they were equal, and Riker really had a good speech) and I liked the poker game scene but in total this episode left me with a bad taste in my mouth. :yuck: 5/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x10 The Dauphin I woudn't waste anyone time to discribe this awful and utterly pathetic Wesley Crusher's romance on hour. 1/10 Posted Image 2x11 Contagion "Enterprise" is called to help a sister ship - in the neutral zone - that is having major system problems. They are able to download the ship's logs from a distance. Unfortunately, the ship is destroyed before they arrive. Then problems start to happen with the Enterprise's computer systems - and then the Romulans show up. Finally everybody stopped to talk about Romulans and finally showed it. And the result came immidiately. It was nice episode, even if story again wasn't too bright. It still was very dynamic with not too much talk and a lot of action. And even if romulans wan't the issue itself, their constant presence with Enterprise constant mulfunctions of systems gave to this episode a right atmosphere and tension. Mostly in this episode I was amused by the scene which must be a combat between Romulans ship and Enterprise when both their shilds, rockets and phasers turned on and off all the time. Riker also was good here making a one great line after another ("If it should become necessary to fight, could you arrange to find me some rocks to throw at them? " (about fighting the romulan ship) and "Fate. Protects fools, little children, and ships named Enterprise. " :app:  ( I believe it must be cutted somewhere in the stone  )). In total really enjoyable episode. 7/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image |

2x12 The Royale The Enterprise discovers debris from a mid 21st century NASA spacecraft around a inhospitable planet. They then discover a zone of breathable area with a structure on it. When Riker, Worf and Data beam down they are trapped in a mid 80's Las Vegas Casino that is based around a poorly written novel entitled 'The Hotel Royale. A below average episode. The intrigue of what is happening lasted almost 5 minutes and then we got explanation like "super aliens did it". I really believe that it exactly was the case when it was simpler and effective to not explain anything than gave such poor explanation. The hotel itself didn't present any intersting characters or situations except Data in Cowboy hat winning in blackjack but it is really not enough. Another thing which bothered be was how easily crew escaped from something that must not have an exit. Instead some technobabble or solving some mystery, Data simply won millions in dice (using his ability to roll right number each time), they bought out the Hotel and walked through the front door. Not impressive. I rather prefer to watch on second installation of Dixon Hill adventures. The only really notable thing here was the scene where Riker prepared omelette. The first appearance of Chef Riker! :frying pan: 4/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x13 Time Squared he Enterprise comes upon a disabled Federation Shuttle containing one life sign. When they bring it on board they discover that it contains an unconscious duplicate Picard. The plot thickens when they discover that the duplicate Picard is from six hours in the future and that he is the only survivor from his Enterprise's destruction. Finally an episode with the right built suspense. I liked the heavy atmosphere of inevitable catastrophe of Enterprise and I was especially impressed by Stewart's acting, scenes with his double mostly. His annoyance, fear and even disguist toward his copy which couldn't prevent Enterprise destruction and dared to survive only added more points to a good oppresive atmosphere. And I was really surprised when Picard killed his double just like that :eviltbbs: . I'd never saw this coming, I though such thing was not in his character, but anyway It possibly must show his difficult state of mind and his determination to do whatever it takes to save his ship and only made this episode better. 7/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x14 The Icarus Factor Riker's delight at being offered a command of the USS Aries turns to frustration when the man sent to prepare him for his mission is his estranged father. A boring and pointless episode. It is obvious for audience that Riker wouldn't accept the offer and basically he simply walking and talking all 45 minutes. And his father is extremely unpleasant character who even had romantic realtionship with awful Dr Pulanski (which degraded him in my eyes even more). And somehow they managed to resolve all their father-son problems (after they didn't speak for 15 years) in 5 minutes which was a little, hmm, far from realistic. :vulcan: A b-plot with Worf going thru Ascention ritual was more intersting but it was too short to save this episode. 2/10 Posted ImagePosted Image |

2x15 Pen Pals During Data's investigation of signals he becomes pen pals with a little girl named Sarjenka who lives on Drema IV. When Data discovers that her planet is in danger of imminent destruction, he informs the Captain that he has been breaking the Prime Directive by talking to someone from a planet without space travel. Meanwhile, William Riker puts Wesley Crusher in charge of the mineral surveys. An abominable episode! It ridicilous to look how 6 people decides to save or not to save a a habitants of whole planet from dying just because they didn't reach Warp level and finally decided to help only because they could invent some excuse to bend a rules. And later they walking all around worrying did they do the right thing. THey even erased poor girls memories just to cover themselves. :ensor: But b-plot somehow was able to be even more pathetic. I didn't now any logical reasons to give a command of a mission to a teenager who even failed to enter to the starfleet academy. Predictably this story was one "this is my first day today" cliche and 'chasing Riker for advice" which ultimately could give him only "you're in charge it means you're right" wisdom. Awful, simply awful. :banghead: 1/10 Posted Image 2x16 Q Who? Q tries to prove that Picard needs him as part of their crew by hurling the Enterprise 7,000 light years away where they encounter the Borg for the first time. Finally the first good Q episode. I think it became possible because Q wasn't the story itself but just a mechanism of introduction the Borg. I must say that despite looking very differently from their modern version this Borg had a lot of same qualities - adaptation, regeneration and ignoring strangers on their ship if they not danger to them.I laso liked that it was mentiontioned that it was them who destroyed colonies in neutral zone. I believe for the first appearance it was more than enough for Borg, things could obviously be much worse. In total absolutely new mysterious enemy an inability of Enterprise to deal with them give episode a great strain atmosphere with was only increased by constant Q apperances and i was really surprised that in the end Picard didn't invent any technobabble, wasn't arrogant enough and simply ask Q's help. There were 2 thing I didn't like - absolutely purposeless feud between Q and Guinan which didn't lead anywhere. Q said that she is a witch of some kind and she moved her hand do defend herself giving audience to undestand that she has some unusual powers, but all of that wan't explained and it more than half of a season and the only thing we know about Guinan that she is a bartender. And second, I didn't like a pointless interaction between LaForge and new ensign Gomez. I thought at first that she will die in the end but she was just simply forgotten. But still it was a good episode. 7/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x17 Samaritan Snare With Picard away for routine surgery, the Enterprise responds to an apparent distress call from a vessel of slow aliens. I admit it was intersting idea to give Picard an artificial heart and it was nice to knew more about Picard as a person, for example how he lost his natural heart in bar brawl with Nauzekans (am I mistake or aren't they the "predator"-like guys which appeared in ENT episode?).But it was a great mitake to show all of this thru "confidential" dialoge with Wesley Crusher (with which he has zero chemistry btw). An awful b-plot with dumb aliens which took LaForge as hostage made the episode even worse. I really can't undrerstand how it possible to send a chief engineer without any protection to absolutely unknown ship after less than 5 minutes of conversation and didn't remove him from their ship immidiately after Troi sensed that they lied to Riker. :vulcan: 2/10 Posted ImagePosted Image Edited by sipovic, 15 Mar 2009, 14:13.

That's further proof of the corruption TNG did to the Prime Directive and is one of the reasons I don't really like the 24th century. It's one thing to not interfere in the natural development of a culture (ala what the PD originally seemed to espouse during TOS), but quite another to sit back and do nothing when natural disasters threaten to obliterate such a culture as they were wont to do in TNG, all the while congratulating themselves on how evolved they are because they sat back and didn't interfere. I'm reminded of that quote about evil triumphing while good men do nothing. The entire morality of TNG offends me on so many levels I can't begin to explain it... |

2x18 Up the Long Ladder A distress signal, leads the U.S.S. Enterprise to save a lost colony about to be destroyed by stellar flares. The Bringloidi colony - which consists of over 200 humans and their animals. - had rejected modern science and was living a pre-industrial Irish life. The entire population is transported to the Enterprise. I suppose this episode supposed to be funny and entertaining but it was one of the most annoying crap I've ever saw :hissyfit: . I have no doubt that Irish people are wonderful and intersting but each time I'm visiting this TRek "universe of stereotypes" I wonder why it all supposed to be funny? Is it really so funny to look how Worf and Riker try to avoid the crash with pigs and goats and tried to reason with local drunks? Or how city leader tried to pimp his daughter to Picard or to Riker? It all was just an absurd. Even Picard himself told that they must manage with this absurd, but why I must do this? :banghead: I really have a lot of more intersting thing to do then watching on pathetic romance for hour between Riker and leader's daughter which appeared from nowhere and ultimately leads to nowhere. Another part of story with second colony where everybody was clones looked as much ridicilous as first part but a little less incongruous then Irish village. The only bright light in this kingdom of darkness was a small segment between Worf and Dr Pulanski when they had a Klingom Tea ceremony and drunk poison to show their courage. 1/10 Posted Image 2x19 Manhunt Lwaxana Troi shows up on the Enterprise with the plan to marry Captain Jean-Luc Picard. When Captain Picard hides in the holodeck. She announces she is engaged to Commander William T. Riker. Did I really need to say something after plot summary like this? I really can't understand necessity of constant appearance of Lwaxana Troi (the character so dreadful that she annoyed me more than Janeway) I wonder are somewhere people who likes her? And with stories like some ridicilous combination of Pon'Farr and mid life crisis what they want to achieve? It also was unforgivable that they spoil second appearance of Dixon Hill (which I really was eager to see) with this "horror"! :ensor: The only goodmoment was an episode when Data saved Picard during his dinner with Troi with his "awesome stories". But it didn't change the whole impression from this crap. :puke: 1/10 Posted Image |

2x20 The Emissary The Enterprise beams aboard an emissary from Starfleet Command. She informs them that a Klingon vessel whose crew has been in cryogenic sleep for almost a century. When they awake they will still believe that the Klingon's are at war with the Federation and since they will be near some Federation outposts, which they would immediately attack. This episode suffered from to much plot wholes and did too little sense. First of all, the whole "freezed klingons" idea sounds barely belivable, second, why Enterprise mission have such secrecy and most imporatantly from whom? Did anyone really give a damn about prehistorical klingon ship? Why nobody informed colonies which klingons supposedly may destroy? And most important question - what was such necessity to send a klingon ambassador which see Enterprise's only option as annihilation of klingon ship? And answer is really very simple. All this so-called "plot" was used for only one thing - to make another shameless romance for hour. :yuck: This time for Worf. And this one was really weak. I like to see Suzie Plakson (she played hot vulcan doctor previously this season) her klingon character was really boring. They have zero chemistry with Worf and really demonstate nothing except shouting and yealling on each other. And somehow I can't believe that Klingons are 'marriage after one night stand" type. I just can't believe it. 3/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image 2x21 Peak Performance The Enterprise crew is ordered to participates in an elaborate Federation war game in which Riker will command an inferior 80 year old ship against Picard. THis episode was a one big fraud. He tried to sell himself under bright ad "Picard vs Riker" but in real life they wasted 30 minutes in preparation to this war game and not really interesting plot with annoying federation observer (why starfleet could send some nice quite guy who wouldn't irritate everyone at least for a once?) the lasted only 3 minutes and was interfered by Ferengi ship which appeared from nowhere( I wonder why federation couldn't pass their war games somewhere inside her space so other races couldn't interfere) and turn it in usual teamwork to outsmart stronger enemy and TNG desided to play safe as usual and not allowed to one of their lead characters to be beaten. Which is pathetic, I think :-/ So dispite some nice moments this episode disappointed me mostly. 4/10 Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image |
