One of the part of my new year's resolution was to finish star trek which includes last 3 seasons of TNG and remastered TOS. SO after 6 month break, filled with new powers I continued my voyage of doomed through dark and depressing seas of TNG

4x11 Data's Day
One day of Data's life, filled with problems of ship, his friends and vulcan ambassadors.
Very nice episode from Data's POV. Through good dialogues with crew members Data demonstated pretty interesting opinions about them and his abilities to fit in and understand human ways. Surprisingly this episode contains not only a lot of good humor (only Data's dancing lessons with Dr. Crusher was worth making this ep) but a little detective story about death of vulcan ambassador (whith turned out to be romulan spy) and O'Brien/Keiko wedding (which can be counted as event in Trek, even if it is a small one. THis episode definitely gave me a lot of positive, may be it was a little lightheaded since one of the top federation diplomats turned out to be a romulan adn nobody really didn't give a damn, this why I rated it a little lower.

4x12 The Wounded
After being fired upon by a Cardassian vessel, Picard races against time to find out the facts behind the Cardassian commander's claim that the Federation attacked one of their outposts.
Excellent episode. I honestly belived that Cardassian/Federation war was DS9 invention so I was really suprised to see Cardassians and Marc Alaimo himself in TNG. They looked a little strange with bizzare headgears and silly outfits (and Alaimo had some kind of beard :guffaw: ), but in the core they was the same treacherous DS9 cardassians. All this this episode was very DS9 style - pretty dark and sad. Rebelious Captain Maxwell who didn't find any support with Federation bureaucracy went to war himself (very Maquis of him) and Picard who must pretend that there wasn't any supply ships for war bases to keep peace at all cost - this was not usual fluffy moralistic TNG stuff. I also was surprised how big part of screen was given to O'Brien and to his conflicted feeling about his former captain and his action during war. In last 2 episodes he not only got more screentime than in previous 3 seasons he actually had more screen time than LaForge, Crusher and Troi (which only makes me happy). The best moment of the episode was of course the scene of Maxwell and O'Brien singing together in dead quiet a song which one of their fallen friend liked to sing.

4x13 Devil's Due
While answering a distress call, Picard met a person claiming to be the devil and that she came to take a planet under contract colonists signed with her thousand years ago.
Must admit, despite being a little idiotic idea of this episode was quite fun, but realisation was dreadful.
First of all, bad choise of actress. She was uncharismatic, constantly overplayed and have nothing in common with devil. Second of all, her rediculous crush on Picard. As a con artist she must be interested in moving all authority figures far away from her to work free, but instead she harassed Picard again and again and even made stupid claims on his ship forcing him to stay. And third, absolutely unnecessary part in court (which probably was some nod to "Devil and Daniel Webster") which reminded circus much more court. THe only really enjoyable segment was the teaser where Data performed as Scrudge.

What a dreadful resolution to make yourself... forcing yourself to watch TNG. But I'll grant you that it does get better around this time.

But TOS will be a treat. It reminds me I still have to catch up on remastered TOS.

4x14 Clues
Effects of passing through a wormhole give the Enterprise crew a sense that they were unconscious for more than the thirty seconds they've been led to believe.
Episode started promisingly with intriguing mystery of lost day and Data's strange behaviour as he tried to lie and falsify evidence of this day existence. But resolution of the mystery was really dissappointing with some pathetic aliens with their pathetic reasons to kill everyone but instead agreeing to erase memories of everybody and making Data be quiet about it. As for the clues, I found it hardly unbelievable that such superior mind as Data could easily forgot to remove some moth or to choose a picture of a planet which LaForge could recognise and spoil everything. SO in total it was an average episode.

4x15 First Contact
Riker get injured on alien planet and became exposed in image of alien just before Picard initiated first contact with this race.
An average episode. It was actually very similar to ENT's "Communicator" except may be here the matter was handled more properly. Episode had some pleasant element of realism in interactions of Picard and the First Minister, I liked that a lot of people didn't want contact with aliens and was very suspitions of them. These part of episode was more o less adequate even if all events was rushed , but Riker's part was absolutely screwed. He mostly layed on the bed without any point and even managed to get himself a geek-girlfriend (absolutely inappropriate comic element). Only because of aliens declined negotiations with federation wisely decided that they wasn't ready for "super enlighted societies" I give this episode 5/10 . And by the way they could easily locate Riker by scanning planet for human lifesighs (which they did 100 times before!!! :banghead: ), they didn;t even bother to made up some excuse like "interferences" or something, hate it when writers got lazy. :oscar:

4x16 Galaxy's Child
While the Enterprise is in a star-base, Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge gets Dr. Leah Brahms, who he know from her 'hologram version' of herself with 'whom' he bonded.
I just don't get it. To ignore LaForge for full season only to make romance for an hour (which hardly can be counted as one since only LaForge tried to do somwthing and didn't get any response) with the same character only real this time (he have the same episode in previous season only with holo version of this engineer :yuck: ). And even if I admit that LaForge harassing stiff and cold dr. Brahms wasn't usual trek romance it still was boring. Funny that despite his obsession with her LaForge missed the fact that she is marttied. B-plot of alien ship gave birth didn't bring much entertainment to this episode.

4x17 Night Terrors
The Enterprise has finally tracked the missing starship USS Britain. The crew was slashed to death; the only survivor, Betazoid Ensign Peeples, is in shock. 34 crewmen killed each-other with phasers and other weapons, even bare hands, a tape recorded a paranoiac fear among them
Weird episode. Despite boring premise of crew acting strangely it had pretty decent atmopshere - right music, creepy noises, pretty tasteful hallucinations( My personal favorites - Dr. Crusher and the Raising Deads of course). All this works well in the first half of episode. Adding to to this no god like aliens involved and I though that this wil be pretty good episode but unfortubately in second part it lost it's good pace and became simply slow and uneventful, and some telepathic aliens wwhich needed help and with whom Troy was able to communicate was actually a bad way to end the show. So in total this episode was average as maximum.

4x18 Identity Crisis
La Forge and an old friend fight to defeat a parasite that is trying to transform them into another species.
This episode have a promising start with interesting part of LaForge mission from the past which brought mystery of his mission friends and possibility to know at least something interesting about him , but mystery turned out to be a casual problems with some stupid aliens and instead interesting past it was very boring LaForge's present.
2/10

4x19 The Nth Degree
When assigned to investigate an unknown probe, Lt. Barclay is electrocuted through a shuttlecraft's computer, where he receives an unexplainable boost of confidence and a vast increase in his knowledge.
It was nice to see Barcklay again and I admit it was interesting to see another side of actor Dwight Schults and his confident and serious Barcklay, but writers put story over the top making hip super intelligent, beating up Einstein and becoming supercomputer (although he looked quite funny as supecomputer), but still too serious atmosphere and idiotic explanation of Barcklay's abilities involving godlike aliens (but at least peaceful ones) didn't gave me a chance to enjoy this episode and killed any point of this it (if there were any of course :oscar: )

4x20 Qpide
Q decides to 'repay' saving his life and Continuum membership by transforming Picard and his accompanying crew-members into Robin Hood and his merry men, challenged to save maid Marian -Varsh- from execution ordered the next morning.
Probably the worst Q TNG episode so far. Usually he have at least some kind of excuse to visit Enterprise and this time he didn't really have any. And here Q didn't have even a decent joke. His only purpose in this episode was to put TNG crew into "Robin Hood" to force Picard to admit feelings for Vash (in existence of which I'm really doubtful) and after that to leave with her- I found this very strange way to give somebody a gratitude. As for Picard/Vash part I admit it is funny while they're arguing but as soon as they're stopping doing it - they're just boring as any other romance for an hour.
At least now I know why Vash and Q appeared together in DS9 episode, which make me to believe that there wouldn't be any more Vash in TNG and for that I'm thankful.

4x21 The Drumhead
A retired admiral boards the Enterprise in an effort to determine the actions aboard the ship surrounding and act of sabotage and possible treason.
The biggest "achievement" of this episode was again to demosntrate federation as complete incompetent fools. On one side they have a demented old lady whom everybody called admiral (even if she wore some silly robe instead of uniform) who seen conspiracies everywhere even if there aren't any and with super-libral Picard on the other side, preaching about constitution and human rights and ignoring an obvious suspitious moments which could be looked more closely at least( if bethazoid sense that person is lying during a spy investation I think it wouldn't be really a military state just to look at person a little closely, especially if he has a romulan blood). And in the end when Picard tried to oppose her she tried to nail him as romulan conspirator, and when Picard shown her full incompetency she still got her job. Yeah, yeah, I know, enlighted society :oscar:
Such episode about paranoia and quick judgement could probably worked in DS9 but here in sugar fluffy TNG without any story or any serious context... Come on!

4x22 Half a Life
Lwaxana Troi visits the Enterprise and becomes infatuated with a man who's culture forces him into a suicidal ritual called.
Awful, awful, awful :banghead: . I hate Lwaxana Troy so much, probably even more than combined Janeway and Wesley Crusher. It is just one embaracement after another. Unwatchable :ensor:

4x23 The Host
Dr. Crusher falls for someone who's not at all what she expects him to be.
It is such a shame that Trill's race debuted is such horrible peace of crap. Starting with extremely boring, appeared from nowhere and awfuly acted romance for an hour between dr. Crusher and Trill it became absolutely unwatchable when trill's slime was putted in Riker. And everything became even more akward then it was. The final scene between Crusher and new trill's woman host amused me. It looks like "enlighted" Doctor could love alien, Riker and even a slime, but not another woman. I suppose it's all 80ties fault.

4x24 The Mind's Eye
Geordi is brainwashed by the Romulans to assassinate a Klingon ambassador.
Decent episode. Finally writers used romulans right- to spoil relations between klingons and Federation. It was a good idea to brainwash LaForge using his visor and to make him sleeping agent. Unfortunately because it was shown from the beginning who was a saboteur this episode didn't make a great suspence or a good pace but still was a pleaseant change from few previous shows. Nice surprise making klingon ambassador another romulan agent who actually controlled LaForge and I'm glad that finally Data save the day using his superior intellectual abilities.
I always found it stupid that Data saved Enterprise less times than Wesley Crusher. :oscar:

4x25 In Theory
When a female crew member is infatuated with Lieutenant Commander Data, he decides to give a romantic relationship a try. Also, the Enterprise finds itself having to maneuver through a dangerous nebula.
Got a mixed feeling about this one. I understood that it was just a matter of time that Data will get romance for an hour, I just wondered would it be different since he is a very special character. I must say it was handle right since it was mostly made not as romance but android's struggle to comprehend and classify love and relationships and its requirements which was doomed to fail of course since he had no feelings. I didn't remember any other moment in Trek where character was simply turned down by a woman in the end. THis episode had a few funny moments but really didn't raise bar very high, plus b-plot with small black holes which crashed into Enterprise didn't feel very appropriate to this partiular episode.
