Doctor Who special gets airdate on BBC America

Well, BBC America is certainly doing its part--actual Christmas specials of DW airing at Christmastime... or actually, on 26 Dec in America, since it airs in England on Christmas day. And they're showing "The Waters of Mars" the previous Saturday, 19 Dec. If they keep that pattern up, then part 2 of "The End of Time" would probably air on 2 Jan 2010, but they haven't officially announced the date for the second part yet.

In any case, it's a lot better than waiting 5 months to see the Christmas special, like it always was on Sci Fi...

ETA: Loved the video clip in the story, by the way. The Doctor with Ood Sigma again... and if I hadn't already known who was returning for the special, that ending would have definitely made me want to watch. And as an added bonus, there's also a former James Bond in the two-part episode (pity it's not Connery, it's Timothy Dalton, but still, he was 007 even if it was only 3 movies).

Okay... I know that they showed William Hartnell (1st Doctor) on the bed, and Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor) on the shuttle (ironically enough sleeping the DW episode they talked about at the beginning of the video, which started himself), and I know that the guy at the end was supposed to be Matt Smith, who takes over as the 11th Doctor next year.

What I can't decide is if the guy in the blue suit with the red tie was supposed to be David Tennant (10th Doctor) or not, since (even for computer animation) it only vaguely resembles him. He has David's wild looking hair, but the face is off... though I'm not sure I can say exactly what is wrong with it. But the other three Doctors looked more like themselves... (okay, you don't really get a good look at the 1st Doctor, but from what we do see, it's not a bad likeness).

It was neat to see the Cybermats and a Cyberman treading through the Howard Johnson's in space, though, LOL...

How I wish it was Christmas already so I could watch the first part of the next Doctor Who special. And then I'll have to wait a whole week to find out how it ends, since part 2 is airing on New Year's Day (must remember to 'acquire' it, since I'll be busy watching at least two bowl games that day in support of the teams from my state).

Pity Amazon still doesn't list the box set with all five of the specials in it yet (instead of having to buy from The Next Doctor through part 2 of The End of Time separately), else I'd put it on pre-order, because I definitely want them on DVD. I liked two out of the first three specials, and a Doctor's regeneration episode is not something I'm likely to miss, especially for a Doctor that I'm fond of, like David Tennant. Wish I could remember where I read that there was going to be a box set release in February, though, so I could check and see if R1 was included, or if it was a R2 only thing instead...

Don't forget, those of you who are lucky enough to have BBC America, that they're airing Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars tonight.

And will be airing parts 1 & 2 of Doctor Who: The End of Time (David Tennant's last story as the Tenth Doctor) the next two Saturdays...

Here's the tidbit that Sci Fi Wire had up this morning on the two-part finale of David Tennant's reign as the Doctor:

Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part One (BBC America), Saturday at 9 p.m.

The Master returns

Series creator Russell T. Davies pens David Tennant's final Doctor Who adventure as the 10th Doctor in the final two specials. When the Master is reborn on Christmas Eve (you can't keep a good villain down!), both he and the Doctor are determined to cheat death in a battle that rages from the wastelands of London to the mysterious Immortality Gate. Meanwhile an ominous warning from the alien Ood, who've already told the Doctor his song will be ending, precedes the fall of a terrible shadow across the Universe. Catherine Tate returns as the Doctor's companion, Donna Noble. Guest stars include John Simm as The Master, Bernard Cribbins, Timothy Dalton, David Harewood, and June Whitfield. Euros Lyn directs. The End of Time, Part Two premieres next week on Saturday, January 2 at 8 p.m.

They also had this lovely picture with the article:

Looks like Wilf might get a chance to see the stars for himself...

Well, I was able to watch part 1 - my buddy actually has BBC America, whereas I don't - and it was ... I dunno. Okay, I guess. This episode had everything I liked and everything I loath about the current incarnation of Who. For starters, I hate the modern version of the Master. He used to be a brilliant evil mastermind, and now he's just a laughing madman ... sort of like how Tennant's Doctor is too often a big goof (although they did a decent job injecting a much darker feel to things in this episode.) Them basically giving the Master super powers was pretty ridiculous and I got sick of the constant Obama references, as if he were some sort of savior for humanity when current events clearly indicate otherwise.

Not sure what I feel about the whole planet full of Masters thing, and I must admit, I'm not all that worried about missing next week's final episode of the Tennant era. *shrug* Maybe I've just lost any interest in Who.

Goodbye, Doctor Who: David Tennant's exit interview

I'm still not sure about Matt Smith, he just looks like he's still in college, and I can't help but think that they chose him to appeal to the Twilight crowd... maybe my opinion will change once I've had a chance to see him as the Doctor, but right now? I just don't know. Though I doubt he could be worse than Colin Baker...

Hopefully I manage to get part 2 before Cincy's game with Florida tonight, because otherwise it'll be late before I get to watch it. Oh, and for those interested, all five Doctor Who specials (from last year's Christmas special "The Next Doctor" through part 2 of "The End of Time", which airs today in England and tomorrow in the U.S.) are available at Amazon's US site for pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray, with a release date of 2 February. I placed my order yesterday...

I'd be happy if the episode I'm trying to get now would finish downloading. It's been going for 6 hours at this point, and I've still got about 30% to go... :banghead:

Okay, I've watched part 2 of the finale. Out of the last 20 minutes of the episode, you can skip all but the last 2 minutes (which has the actual regeneration), but the first 50 minutes or so of the episode was actually a coherent story--without RTD trying to throw everything, including the kitchen sink, into the final part of a multi-part episode.

The plot, while simplistic, makes sense based on what he's established both in the prior episode (and for things mentioned previously in the show--let's hear it for continuity!). It was a bittersweet ending for the Doctor--what you think is going to be the end of him isn't, and what does turn out to be the cause of his regeneration broke my heart.

There was also a little Star Wars homage (and I mean the original movie) in the middle of the episode.

The Time Lords, as those who watched last week's episode know, are involved in this particular finale, and I grabbed this screencap of Gallifrey from the beginning of this episode:

The Sam Beckett "putting things right" syndrome, with all the previous companions (and assorted aliens that showed up on DW, Torchwood or SJA) who were around during RTD's era, for the last twenty minutes of the episode, though, was a little much. This is why I suggest skipping that part and instead coming back about 3 minutes or so from the end, because that's when the actual regeration takes place.

Those scenes with the companions (even if the Doctor didn't really interact with any of them except for Donna's mom and Wilf) really wasted what came right before that--which was easily one of the best scenes ever, I think, on Doctor Who, be it the old or the new version--because this stuff was sandwiched in between the cause of the regeneration and the actual regeneration itself, and destroyed the emotional impact of the previous scene...

The rest of the episode, however, was pretty good, considering RTD usually screws everything up in the final part of his multi-part stories.

ETA: And here's the trailer for season 5 straight from youtube, so you can decide for yourself if the 11th Doctor looks too young or not...

O... kay...

Fox develops U.S. Torchwood; John Barrowman could star

Not real sure how they're going to do that, considering Torchwood was started because of Queen Victoria nearly being turned into a werewolf, and Torchwood's primary mission was to watch for the Doctor, because she considered him (and any other aliens) a menace...

And I'm not real thrilled that RTD is writing the pilot script, either.

For those interested, Sci Fi wire has the BBC America promo trailer for the 11th Doctor and his companion.

I really wish that they'd stop with the British female companions for the Doctor. What's wrong with the occasional male companion? Or having more than one companion at a time? Or someone from another country or, heaven forbid, another planet, like Tegan and Turlough were for the 5th Doctor?

Doctor Who back in April with new stars, old enemies

Still not real excited by the 11th Doctor, he simply looks like he should be some college kid, not a 900-year-old Time Lord, and I know I certainly wouldn't listen to him. And *sigh* can they please get off the contemporary era British female companion kick already? I mean, seriously... There's plenty of other places out there, and even if they don't want to leave the British Isles, they could go for Welsh or Irish or Scottish for some variety. I'd seriously rather have a guy as a companion for a while--and "for a while", I mean more than 2 episodes or a guest star from a spin off show.

Though I am glad to see that River Song from the Library two-parter is back. :D I liked her quite a bit. She was interesting, and looked to be a good match for the Doctor, unlike a certain blond I can name...

From Ausiello:

Torchwood exclusive: Would U.S. version turn Captain Jack straight?

Wouldn't surprise me, not after what they did to the Doctor in the TV movie that Fox produced some 15 years or so ago...
