So, I got my four season sets the other day. I bought them because I've seen a lot of people rave about this show and I managed to find some really inexpensive sets ($44 per set). Normally Farscape DVDs are very expensive - even more than Star Trek - but these are Australian sets I bought from a Danish retailer. But I have a region free DVD player so that doesn't matter.
One sometimes annoying thing is that there are no subtitles, not even English ones. Usually I have subtitles turned off, but sometimes I want to know exactly what someone or something is called, so I turn on the subtitles for that sequence. I had to look online to learn how D'Argo and Zhaan spelled their names.
*****
Anyway, on to the show. I have watched the first four episodes now and so far it hasn't grabbed me as much (yet) to make me a "scaper" (is that the proper name for the fans?). But I've been told that it gets better and more interesting in mid-season or so.
Still, I like it. The characters are cool even if I had a time waming up to pretty boy John Crichton. But then I saw that there's a little more depth to him. Crichton actually goes against the "pretty hero" norm you might expect when you first see Browder, and that's refreshing.
Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) is interesting and she's appealing in a different sort of way. She's not your normally beautiful heroine but nevertheless manages to be sexy anyway. Odd that, hm! But she does looks very good in black! And the way she fights with Crichton reminds me of other "opposites attract" couples. Gah, lord help me if I turn out be an Aeryn/John shipper!
They are on odd bunch, the crew on Moya, and I still don't really get how they ended up there. If they were prisoners then shouldn't there have been more prisoners onboard? And Moya itself, why did it adapt to taking orders from the escapees with such ease? The "peacekeeprs", what species are they? They look human but they're clearly not meant to be that.
I don't mind the "muppets" at all. Jim Henson is skilled and I can actually believe that Rygel and the Pilot are "real" alien persons. And I think Rygel is my favourite! :cookiemonster:
For some reason I think of Rigil whenever I see D'Argo! :rasberry: I dunno, there's something about him that says that if Rigil was in the Scapeverse he'd be just like D'Argo! Just kidding, man... Well, sorta...
I'll be back to tell you more about the individual episodes.

This is very true. I was pretty indifferent to the show until a little past midseason (I think). It probably wasn't until they introduced Chiana that I was totally captured...

It's remarkably interesting to look at John Crichton at the very beginning of the series, and then look at him at the end of the series. Whoo buddy, that's a helluva change.

Aeryn/John does remind me (a lot) of Trip/T'Pol, what with Aeryn being closed off emotionally and John being very much an emotional guy.

I think they explain that a bit later, actually, but I can't recall.

Moya & Pilot were slaves themselves. Remember the docking collar thing they blew off in the pilot? That was how the Peacekeepers controlled them.

Sebacean (I think that's how you spell it). You'll find out a lot more about them as the show progresses.

Dude, D'Argo is frelling cool. He actually reminds me a little of G'Kar in B5 ... he starts out as one thing and transitions to something entirely different. I love Big D...

Well, I fell in love with the show after seeing only the last twenty minutes of the third episode, so I'm probably atypical... (and then Back and Back and Back to the Future, which I caught the next day on the Saturday repeat ensured that it was going to be one of my favorites).
But yes, right around the episodes Til the Blood Runs Clear and They've Got a Secret is when it starts to get interesting, and Durka Returns (which is the episode that introduces Chiana) and A Human Reaction were the ones that really drew people in. And then the four episodes at the end of the season...
Let me apologize in advance, though, for Jeremiah Crichton... not one of the better episodes.
Ben does an awesome job, like Rigil said, with Crichton. Definitely have to agree, there's a total difference in outlook by the end of the series. And yes, John/Aeryn does end up with that TnT feel toi their relationship...
As to the situation with the prisoners--originally, the producers were going to have a lot more prisoners on the ship. Then they realized that realistically they would be blowing the budget on the various aliens on the ship, and scaled back. And yes, Rigil's right, they do explain later on why there's only Zhaan, D'Argo and Rygel left on the ship when Crichton makes his appearance.
There will be more about Moya and Pilot's backstory in season 2 (The Way We Weren't, which is also shows more of Aeryn's backstory as well). And yes, Rigil, you spelled Sebacean correctly.
:)
Rygel, I think, undergoes almost as much a transformation as Crichton does over the course of the show, though it's more subtle in his case. He's still got all his bad habits at the end, but he's also grows over the course of the series. And if you think Rygel's funny, you should meet Jonathan Hardy (the man behind Rygel's voice). I have (three different times, actually) and he's a riot. And those bushy eyebrows of Rygel's? Jonathan has them too. You'll get to see him during the Look at the Princess trilogy in season 2 (I believe it's the second episode)--he plays the alien who has dealings with Moya and Pilot while the rest of the crew is on the planet. I loved Rygel, enough that the Farscape site I opened was dedicated to him...
D'Argo is awesome, too. Like Rigil said, he grows throughout the series. I only wish we'd gotten the season 5 we were promised (not that I didn't like Peacekeeper Wars, but knowing what they had planned for D'Argo in that lost fifth season makes me wish we could have seen it instead).
One thing to remember about Farscape: actions on this show have consequences, very unlike Star Trek (or at least Star Trek at times). There's a wonderful third season episode, (...Different Destinations), which illustrates that beautifully... but you'll see examples of that long before you get to that episode. It may take awhile for the consequences to show up, but excepting a few loose ends, they do eventually occur.

Durka Returns (which is the episode that introduces Chiana)
Ah Durka. That guy rocked. I totally dug the actor they got for him. His voice was just wicked cool...

Ugh. Ain't that the truth. On the flip side, I'd rather watch JC then The Seventh or ANIS or TATV any day of the week.

Wouldn't it be more technically correct to say it was the other way around? Wasn't Farscape already out when ENT showed up?

I'd argue that the entire crew goes through those sort of transformations with the possible exception being Pilot who does change, just not as significantly.

cough*trellium addiction*cough.
That is one of the selling points for me regarding Farscape and one of the reasons I generally consider myself more of a 'Scaper than a Trekkie or Trekker.

Well Farscape started in March 1999, and the last episode aired in March 2003, so yes, they were around first.
But mostly I compared Trip and T'Pol to Han/Leia myself, especially in the Bound corridor scene, which is almost a straight copy of Han/Leia's scene on Hoth, rather than to John/Aeryn. I could see elements of their relationship that were similar in both cases, including the angst, though Farscape at least made up for it in a big way.

You wouldn't get an argument from me, they all grew in their own ways. But I also know some people who still thought that Rygel was the same little greedy manipulative guy that they wanted to throw out an airlock in season 1 by the end of the series as well, and totally ignore the sublties to his development.

It was one of the things I loved about the show as well. And I think they did a remarkable job of tying together in Peacekeeper Wars a lot of the loose ends from the show (even if they couldn't possibly tie them all up).
And heck--Farscape is the show that got me to go to conventions somewhat regularly. I'd been to exactly one sci-fi convention before that: the MST3K Conventio-Con Expo Fest-a-Rama 2 in Minneapolis in '96. But I went to 4 ScaperCons, Galaxy Con, the Creation Burbank con, and the Midwest Comic Con during or shortly after Farscape's run, and I made a lot of friends at those cons, some of whom I saw last summer at Shore Leave, and attended a wedding between two fellow Scapers a couple years ago.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
:)
I have now seen the first eight episodes, so I'll do a brief run down of my impressions of them thus far.
- 1-Premiere
I felt this was sort of rushed and would've benefitted if it had been a two hour pilot (or a two-parter). There was just too much to cram into this one, and introducing both the viewers and Crichton to this new place. But it does get points for showing how alien everything is. And very convenient to have injected John with translation germs (or whatever they were called) to explain how they could understand each other so quickly. I also thought that Aeryn's "conversion" happened too fast. Why did she start to trust Crichton and the escapees so quickly? Given her background it should've been a slower process.
- 2-I, E.T.
This one was kinda meh! I couldn't really get into the story and the planet seemed too much like Earth (which perhaps was the point). The scenes on Moya, with Rygel trying repairs were better.
- 3-Exodus from Genesis
This started out like an Aliens story, but became more interesting when it was revealed that those bugs actually weren't malevolent. I had more problems with the Peacekeepers here. They didn't seem all that menacing and frankly the concept of them not tolerating heat made them even less effective as credible foes. Just toss some heat their way and you can defeat them. But sweaty Aeryn looked good (nice legs, hehe...).
- 4-Throne for a Loss
I like this one, probably because it featured Rygel a lot, as he got kidnapped, and the rest had to figure out a way to free him. I also liked the fact that even if Zhaan did her best to free that alien boy from addiction, he nevertheless decided to keep taking that strength enhancing fluid. You'd never see that on Trek.
- 5-Back and Back and Back to the Future
This has a Reset Button(tm) warning to it as we see Crichton experience the "future" again and again, albeit in slightly different forms, and it grew tiring after a while, even if it used a novel approach. I suppose we'll hear more from the Ilanics and their enemies (Scorvions?) later. But I have to say, on a more shallow note, that Aeryn is looking better and better with each episode. We see plenty of her nice stomach here and I just love her long thick black hair. And that accent...
- 6-Thank God it's Friday. Again.
This one was also kinda meh! Enslaved and drugged up people must be saved by our heroes. Feels a bit clichéd if you ask me. But I liked how Rygel's bodily fluids were explosive, and I laughed hard when he peed! :lol2: Aeryn using her brains was also nice.
- 7-PK Tech Girl
I really enjoyed this one, which gave some more insights to the Peacekeepers. I'm still not sure what they are, though. Are they a ruling empire or something else? Love their orwellian name though. The PK Tech girl was cute and it was a hoot to see Aeryn get jealous when she accidentaly saw her and John kissing. I do wonder what took out that powerful PK vessel? I don't think it was those fire-breathers, they seemed to be more like scavengers. Rygel's character gets more depth here, as he relives what happened when he was once tortured onboard that ship.
- 8-That Old Black Magic
I'm torn about this one. On the one hand it gave some great insights as to what motivates Crais. But on the other hand I thought that the fighting between him and Crichton got too drawn out and a bit tiresome. I liked that John wasn't able to get through to Crais though. Another non-Trek moment. Oh, and that sorcerer guy seemed to have learned from that alien in TOS's Day of the Dove.
Generally I will say that what I've liked the most thus far is the carachter developments. You can see the progession from episode to episode how they interact, learn and co-operate with each other. They may be different but they eventually takes care of each other, whether it's rescuing Rygel from kidnappers or goes down to free D'Argo from a drugged up life as a labourer. And they may not even like each other that much.

Translator microbes, I think. They actually have an episode down the road where you get to hear what some of their languages sound like to someone who doesn't have the microbes...

Well, given the alternative ... they actually made a point of stating that irreversibly contaminated means death, right?

I kind of liked the heat delirium, myself. And it makes a little bit of sense why they took that road a bit later with the introduction of a new foe...

I completely agree with that, especially the growing friendship between John and D'Argo. I was actually able to completely buy that friendship as I got to see it develop over time...

Well, I wouldn't say that Aeryn exactly trusts the escapees at this point. They certainly don't trust her. Crichton, being the only one who isn't involved in their little disagreements (and looking similar enough to her own people), she sort of trusts, but even she thinks he's a complete idiot because he doesn't know how to do the simplest things. But right now, at this point, he's willing to give her a chance to live and that's something she's not going to get from the PKs.

Yeah, it is kind of bland, but it's also supposed to be about how Crichton realizes that he's the alien there, the ET who shows up on another world. Sci Fi originally didn't air this episode as the second one (they waited and showed it as the 7th episode of season 1--which was really dumb, because Crichton had already started changing from his completely naive self by that point).

Ah yes, EFG... the last 20 minutes of this episode was what I caught as I was flipping the channels on 2 April 1999 (having forgotten that I'd planned to watch the premiere two weeks earlier for whatever reason), and hooked me on this show. Rigil's right, there is a very good reason why heat causes problems for the Sebacean people, and it is explained later on in the series (though you'll have to wait til the second season to meet the bad guys he's referring to).

Loved this episode as well. Especially since the others weren't exactly sure they wanted to rescue him. And Rygel knew it. If he hadn't taken that bit of the ship with them, I really doubt that anyone would have come after him.

One of the few reset button episodes I don't really mind. Unfortunately, no, we don't learn a lot more about the Ilanics or the Scorvians later on. I think they may be mentioned once or twice more, but that's it.

Had a few funny moments, like you mentioned, with Rygel's explosive body fluids, or Aeryn's line about the albino woman giving her a woody... But yeah, not one I watch a lot.

The Peacekeepers didn't start out being an empire, they literally started out being soldiers who kept the peace on various worlds. They kind of morphed over the centuries into what they are now, a powerful force in the galaxy in their own right. And that's all I'm going to say about it, because they do explain it better later on in the series (and miniseries).
Gilina will be back later. As for what took out the Zelbinion... you'll find out in Durka Returns.
Curious little trivia fact: This episode, not the premiere, was actually the first Farscape episode aired. It was shown on USA several days prior to the Premiere airing on the Sci Fi channel.

Maldis is an interesting character, and how Zhaan stopped him in this episode will have consequences down the line for her.
And it has the death of poor Lt. Teeg at the end of the episode. Poor girl, tried so hard to protect Crais and didn't think of what would happen to her if he decided not to follow High Command's orders and leave the Uncharted Territories back for their own space...

^ Well, Gilina's only in a couple more episodes (a few at the end of the season, and one later in the series), so don't get too attached to her.
Yeah, Crais is pretty fixated on getting Crichton. Poor Lt. Teeg just got in the way of that obsession...
Can't wait to see your reaction to some of the upcoming episodes.

I've seen another four episodes. Damn. It gets really addictive when you conveniently have all the episodes at once and don't have to wait for a new episode every week. This is especially true if it's something you've never seen before. The last time I experienced this was when I had dl'ed ENT s3 and spent three days just going through the entire season. :eek3:
Anyway, here are some small impressions:
- 9-DNA Mad Scientist
Man, this was really, really creepy, but in a good way. But I shudder just thinking about it. I was very surprised at how callous they were (well, not John and Aeryn) when they unceremoniously just cut off one of Pilot's arms. Poor guy! But at the same time it showed how desperately they wanted to get home. And poor Aeryn too! Ick! Being transformed like that. My main nit is that it is a sci-fi cliché to have someone metamorph like that (and back) in such a short time. Realistically no one could survive that. They'd die from the chock and trauma because of the intense pain.
- 10-They've Got a Secret
Yep, secrets abound here when Moya is pregnant (cool idea btw) and we learn about D'Argo's past. I could really empathize with the guy. Having his beloved wife be murdered, by her own brother no less, and then being balmed for the murder. And his son somewhere in hiding! Yeah, a whole new depth to his character. It also felt very creepy when Moya turned on them and those DRDs really got menacing. Who'd have thunk?
- 11-Till the Blood Runs Clear
This was a real nice John and D'Argo friendship bonding episode. As has been said before, they show it instead of just tell it on this show. One small nit is that there should be no way for John to get his Earth ship (the Farscape?) of the ground by itself. It's just a small plane that would need an external booster, such as the space shuttle we saw in the pilot episode.
- 12-Rhapsody in Blue
So far the character that I have been the least interested in has been Zhaan, even if she has shown some interesting traits before. But in this episode we really learn a lot more about her and her people. There had been previous hints that there is something dark beneth the Delvians but I never thought it'd be this dark. If they were to put their talents to use in an evil fashion that would be... scary indeed. With these revelations about D'Argo and now Zhaan, I'm staring to wonder if there's more to Rygel's imprisonment than we've learned up until now. On a shallow note, I noticed Aeryn wearing what looked like John's underwear. Anyway, she looked really hot there...

Well, be glad you do have all of them. Some of the breaks over here were a lot longer than a week between episodes. Heck, we waited 8 frellin' months between episodes 3.18 and 3.19, because Sci Fi wanted to pair up Farscape with SG1... not to mention the 18 month wait for the resolution to the season 4 finale...

Yeah, that scene where D'Argo, Zhaan and Rygel were all so desperate for just the merest chance to find their way home really slams home the point that they aren't a team, working together for the common good. It was a much talked about scene when it first aired. Aeryn, of course, knows that she can't go back home--not without being killed since she's been declared 'irreversibly contaminated,' so she's not interested in a map back to the Peacekeeper/Sebacean territory. And John isn't from anywhere around there, so Namtar's map doesn't work for him.
(BTW, did you get the subtle play on Namtar's name? Namtar is "Ratman" spelled backwards...) As far as Aeryn's transformation... it's another thing that will have ramifications down the road.

Well, they do tell you in the title sequence that Moya is a 'ship... a living ship, full of strange alien lifeforms... my friends.' And the fact that D'Argo (however accidently) induced the pregnancy by knocking loose the PK seal was also a nice twist. Something else that will be explained more in later episodes. Yes, poor Lo'lann and Jothee, D'Argo's wife and son, and poor D'Argo too... but there's still more development to come for our dear Luxan (who was often compared to Worf during the series' run, actually).

As for Farscape-1 (John's ship), he (and presumably the DRDs) attached a hetch drive to it so that it could travel a bit faster (and farther) than it could before, so it can do some things it couldn't have done prior to his ending up in the Uncharted Territories... I don't think they mention that it has a hetch drive on it, though, until Jeremiah Crichton...

Zhaan's dark side is brought to the fore in part by her actions in stopping Maldis. As for Rygel... well, he's the deposed Dominar of the 600 billion people of the Hynerian Empire, replaced by his cousin Bishan.

Nope, that eluded me. But given his original form, that name isn't surprising...

LOL... yeah, it was not a fun night (I was watching the season finale with about 8 other people, and we were all pissed at Sci Fi all over again, some 6 months after the cancellation news had come out, because it ended with 'To Be Continued...' and then Sci Fi in the next instant stuck up their "thanks to the cast, crew and fans of Farscape for 4 wonderful years" message.) But the miniseries came out and resolved it.

True. It was amusing little thing we noticed though at the time. And that was an actual actor standing on stilts in that costume... not a CGI effect.

Hetch drive is Farscape's equivalent of warp drive. Moya and all the ships on the show use some form or another of it. Though Moya also has the inborn ability to "starburst".

There's a little more explanation, but mostly it's just that his cousin wanted the throne and made a deal with the Peacekeepers in order to get it, which is why Rygel is being kept prisoner by them.

Another five episodes...
- 13-The Flax
Oh my, did things get a little hot here or what? Although I knew that John and Aeryn were a couple in the making I didn't expect it to advance to this level so soon. OK, so they backtracked and made excuses in the end, but they did kiss and were about to do the horizontal mambo hadn't D'Argo came crashing in (loved the amused look on his face, hehe...) It was also quite moving that Aeryn opted for not finishing her work so that she could bring John back to life. I don't just buy that she did it because she didn't want to die alone. I really liked devious Rygel here too, an how he fooled not just those scavengers but also Zhaan into thinking that he'd lost. And poor D'Argo who found out that that scavenger guy wasn't really a guy... :lol2:
- 14-Jeremiah Crichton
OK, you warned me about this one and I have to agree. This wasn't very good. It's a clunker and probably the worst episode yet. I wanted to see more of John/Aeryn but we got none of that. Just John storming off in a hissy fit and get left behind. In itself that could've been interesting but then the episodes turns into a cheesy love triangle among natives and Rygel is a God (in a scene that reminded me of 3PO in Jedi). Gah!
- 15-Durka Returns
Now this was really good. Rygel's torturer is back and it was cool to see his reaction, and then how he was something of a Cassandra character. But even if psycho Durka was creepy, that was nothing compared to the creepiness of the Nebari. *shudders* This is also my first glimpse of Chiana and what can I say, I kinda liked her. Rebellious and snarky, she's not your average heroine chick. She also looks cute, even with the makeup. I know she was probably trying to use her sexuality on John to further her own agenda, but I have to wonder, will the show have a "love triangle" here, and has there been any "shipper wars" among the 'Scapers?
- 16-A Human Reaction
Didn't care that much for this one. As soon as we saw the Earth on the other side of the wormhole I knew this was going to be a Reset Button(tm) episode, a.k.a. "it was all in his head". It was further underlined with the alien autopsy on Rygel. And how did they dare to have John and Aeryn's second kiss (not to mention them sleeping together) to be all in his mind too... But Claudia looked real nice in that flowery dress, and this despite that I prefer her dark combat fatigues. I did like the very moving goodbye scenes at the beginning though. Especially between John and D'Argo and the looks between John and Aeryn. This crew has advanced and you know they were going to miss each other terribly.
- 17-Through the Looking Glass
A bit of standard fare sci-fi, but it was nevertheless quite good and actually had me wondering just how they'd get out of this mess. Joking Rygel was funny and John and Aeryn playing charades was hilarious. Chiana also got to be a part of the action. But I think the best part was when they were all sitting down eating and joking with each other in the end. At last they've really come together as a crew and as friends, celebrating the I suppose imminent birth of Moya's baby (who they refused to have aborted to save themselves).

Well personally, I found them advancing the Aeryn/John relationship this quickly makes more sense than the way they usually string this stuff out for two seasons. Look at the situation: they're trapped on the same small little (okay, not so little) ship with only one another for company. There's an obvious attraction between the two and both of them are all alone out here. As it stands, Aeryn can't go home Ever and John is so far from home that he might as well not be able to go home either. Plus, Crichton is a guy. End of story.

Durka rocks. I love the actor's voice. And no, there is no "shipper war" between the 'Scapers since everyone knows that it's Aeryn/John. Chiana is just like that to everyone...

I don't really count this as a Reset Button because memory is not erased at the end of it. Plus, we got to hear some of the other languages and this episode does have a significant effect on future episodes. One could almost call this a pivotal episode. I can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode when John "goes home". :guffaw:

Well, I'm pre-conditioned from watching Trek to not like Reset Button(tm) episodes and I consider "it was all just in someone's imagination" to be a sub-set of those kind of episodes.

I personally define a reset button as an episode where they radically change everything and then undo by episode's end with none of the main characters having an memory of it. This was slightly different, especially since all of the characters had memory of what happened, and it was just a simulation...
But I do see your point about how this could be classified as such.

Yes, that bit at the end with Staanz was priceless... And Rygel's sneakiness is always a good thing. Especially since he didn't let Zhaan in on his plan, so her reaction more than anything would convince the pirate that Rygel wasn't trying to trick him.

Yeah, it was pretty lousy. They went for the whole Robinson Crusoe in space idea (at least for the start of the show), and it only went downhill from there. Though I did like the part where Rygel felt incredibly guilty about what his ancestor did to those people, his own subjects, in the first place and wanted to help them...

Nah, no shipper wars. There was a very vocal group, however, after Chi was introduced (especially after the next episode) who wanted her gone because they saw her as a threat to John/Aeryn. I never got that attitude myself, especially since there was one episode concerning her and about a minute of her in A Human Reaction... but eventually she won over just about everyone who watched the show. And yeah, Rigil's right, Chi's like that with everyone. Except maybe Rygel... :lol2: Though she and Rygel have some of the best (and funniest scenes) together in the series, IMO...

Well, I never considered it a reset button episode myself. Especially for the reasons Rigil already stated. This was the episode that first got me posting on the old Farscape board at Sci Fi, after several months of lurking. It is easily one of the more popular episodes of the first season. This is the episode that basically sets up the ongoing story arc for Crichton for the rest of the series.
Say Rigil, are you referring to the season 2 or the season 4 episode that you want to see his reaction to?
Well, you're now five episodes from the end of the season... and about to hit the episodes that drew in a bunch of viewers. Can't wait to hear what you think of them.
:)
