Is anyone other than me watching this show? It's not bad - not as good as Rome, but still not bad.

Is this like a documentary or is it a drama such as Sopranos and Rome?

I don't know if anyone (besides Rigil) has seen this, but this weekend I watched the entire first season of this show.

It was fairly good, but not as good as Rome, taken in itself The actors were mostly very good, but I found the story and plot lacking. For one thing the pacing was too slow. The last few episodes just went round and round forever with the subject of Henry VIII trying (in vain) to get the papacy to annul his marriage with Catherine of Aragon. By the time the season was over we'd heard the same arguments over and over and over again. And the plot with composer Thomas Tallis was totally nonsensical.

But my main gripe was the glaring historical inaccuracies. i can understand that you might want to take some creative licences for the sake of the story, but this was just too much. Dates and events were mangled and tossed around for no apparent reason.

I didn't like that Cardinal Wolsey committed suicide. In fact, he died naturally while en route to answer accusations of treason.

However, the worst inaccuracy was that of Henry's sister, Princess Margaret (played by the lovely Gabrielle Anwar). Her character was an amalgamation of Henry's two sisters Margaret and Mary (mostly the latter). It made no sense to do this. Both sisters (especially Margaret) had a pivotal role to play in English history. Margaret was the one who married the King of Scotland and that is from where the Stuart claim to the throne came.

But this "Margaret" didn't marry the Scottish king. This "Margaret" married (as the real Mary did) Charles Brandon, the Duke of Suffolk. Eventually the grandchild of the real Mary Tudor would be Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen for nine days before being deposed by "Bloody" Mary, Henry VIII's daughter by Catherine. But this "Margaret" didn't even have children with Suffolk. She died of consumption with no issue, thus making the entire plotline with her totally irrelevant. If this show will ever make it to that point in history, I'm at a loss how they'll explain Jane Grey and how and why James VI of Scotland came to be King James I of England.

I understand that there has been a second season shown this spring (and a third coming). Has anyone seen that? If so, what did you think about it?

I watched most of season 2 but kinda lost interest due to the numerous historical inaccuracies. Plus, it was really hard to find anyone in the show to actually like or to root for, so ultimately, my attention waned and I just sort of stopped watching it.

Ah, even more historical inaccuracies... Why am I not surprised?

Well, at least I got a bit interested in the Tudor era again. Anyone know of a good book or two about this era?

Wish I could help, KTR, but usually I stick to the Roman era if I'm reading something historical...

I did see something on TV about Henry VIII about a month ago, but I think it was just some two hour bit about his life that was on the History channel. I can't even remember what it was called now... only that I remember them going on and on about how he was trying to convince the papacy to grant him a divorce and when they wouldn't do it, he was convinced by one of his advisors to establish a new church and make himself the head of it so he could get rid of Catherine...

Hi guys...

I watched most of the first season a while back, and I haven't watched any of the second season. The story is a bit interesting as a drama since there is a lot going on, but the historical inaccuracies bothered me very much. Funny thing is that in while some episodes you feel like they are trying to cram as much as possible in there, some other just go on and on without really getting anywhere.

Princess Margareth's plotline bothered me, both then again, as KTR said, some plotlines in this series are just nonsense entirely. I hope noone is taking any history tests based on this show.

Heh! I wouldn't be surprised if some lazy students of today are actually doing just that... :ermm:

I agree, they probably are. After all, there was plenty of kids when I was in school who only either read the Cliff Note version (or watched a movie version of a book) or just used whatever was written on the inside of the book cover to write reports and take tests. I doubt the ones today are any brighter... they've just moved up to plagerizing stuff off the Internet instead of doing their own work.

Hi :wave2:

I've been around, but I have been busy with some extremely important stuff in real life that require my absolute attention. I still come and lurk, but posting hasn't exactly been a priority.

BTW, I know Rigil is busy with school, and that he says he's lost interest in the Trek stuff, but man! you just don't leave us hanging on FOUR fics! :pokestick: I need my fanfic dosage, Kent! :pokestick: I have withdrawal sympthoms and everything!

Well, that was not the intention. At least not entirely.

Hmmm... I wish there was something I/we could do to get your TnT muse active again. I have all four stories in my PDA, and well, I'm dying to update them.

Thanks for the warm wishes on my new endeavor, guys. This ought to keep me busy for the next few decades or so...
