Taking this discussion to its own thread... So, I watched episode 3 today and this time Gaius and Lucius, the sons of Julia, bit the dust courtesy of Livia. Let's see... the body count is now at least four: Marcellus, Drusus, Gaius and Lucius. |

No, but this forum seems to fit a little better. Boston Legal isn't sci-fi, yet it's in this area... |

Ah yes, Gaius and Lucius. Never had a chance against her. Has Julia been exiled yet because she broke the laws about morality her own father Augustus had passed? I couldn't find my tapes today, so I'm trying to go by memory here... |

Well, Boston Legal has the Shat man. Granted, I, Claudius has Patrick Stewart as Sejanus, but that wasn't a main role! |

Yes, she got exiled after Livia blackmailed Lucius's friend and one of Julia's lovers to reveal Julia's promiscuity. Poor Augustus! He yelled "Is there anyone in Rome who hasn't slept with my daughter!" And Tiberius is really beginning to show his nasty streak in the way he treats his astrologist. |

Sometimes I felt sorry for Tiberius... at least early on in that miniseries. But after awhile, he was just as bad as his mother. And Sejanus is in I think about 4 or 5 episodes of it... not too shabby for someone who's going to die a rather gruesome death. And poor Augustus, he really couldn't catch a break in this miniseries, not with Livia around. Everyone he approves of as a possible successor (well, except for Tiberius, of course) always ends up dead or exiled... |

Yeah, I sort of feel sorry for Tiberius; he ended up as frakked up as he was because of his mothers manipulations. Still, it's pretty frakked up that he was in love with his own sister (or was that Caligula?) Anyway, someone else I feel sorry for was Claudius himself, who was also a victim of manipulation and he ended up getting poisoned in the end. |

I think Tiberius could've been saved had it not been for his mother. Livia is the one that pushed him until he finally became a bad person. If he had been allowed to remain happily married to his first wife Vipsania, and had his brother Drusus stayed alive and been a moderating influence, I think Tiberius would've come out all right. Alas, for him and Rome, that was not to happen... :(
That was Caligula. |

Well, I knew it was one or t'other, they were both pretty frakked up, and both started out pretty innocently. |

Gaius Caligula (which means "Little Boots" in Latin) was the one who slept with his sister, and in fact got her pregnant (at least in the miniseries). Tiberius was, as KTR said, quite happily married to Vespania, and was forced to divorce her by his mother so he could marry Julia instead (whom he most definitely did not want to marry), to fulfill her desire to have her son as ruler of the empire. And yes, Livia's influence had a lot to do with how Tiberius turned out. |

^ Even if they don't preempt, they'll interrupt with details of whatever local races are going on, and have the picture smushed up to show results running across the bottom of the screen. I pretty much don't watch broadcast TV on election nights for that reason... Let's see, if Julia's banished, then we're somewhere around 2 A.D. Clock's ticking on Augustus (d. 14 A.D.)... I think he'll have one, maybe two more episodes if I remember right in this miniseries. And has Claudius made friends with Herod yet? |

Just watched episode four and now Livia's sights are on poor Postumus, sole surviving son of Agrippa and Julia. He eventually gets banished to a small and remote island, just like his mother. And poor Claudius gets married to a freakishly tall woman... As for:
I was right! Augustus did say "Quinctilius Varus, where are my eagles?" :rasberry: |

Saw episode five today and it ended with Augustus's death, of course at the poisonous hands of Livia. Then she had exiled Postumus killed by Sejanus (Patrick Stewart; weird seeing him so young and with a set of hair). Also a witness to Augustus's changed will was killed. Poison is Queen! Poison is Queen! Poison is Queen! |

Since the subtitle was "and other talk about ancient history", I figured this is as good a place as any. Have any of you seen the the trailers for 300? It's stylized as hell and I actually doubt that the history of the battle of Thermopylae will be accurate but man! It looks cool... |

^ No, didn't realize they were making a movie about Thermopylae.. sounds neat, though. When's it due out? Got to agree, KTR, Patrick Stewart looks strange with hair. I remember when I first saw I, Claudius, it was in the summer of 1991. So seeing him on Friday nights bald as Captain Picard in the TNG repeats, then with hair as Sejanus on Sunday nights was exceedingly odd... And didn't you just feel sorry for Claudius? I mean, here Augustus was ready to make real changes, and Claudius is beginning to hope things will be different... and then Livia strikes again. |

It does indeed look very cool, but there's no way to tell how the movie will play out. It can be one of those flashy films with little substance beneath the posh surface.
I really felt more sorry for poor Augustus. Here he finally realized who Livia really was and tried to correct his mistakes. Alas it was too late... I liked that Augustus also came to realize that Claudius was a smart and good fellow and confided in him. |
