How far along in the third book are you, KTR? Yeah, that first 60 pages or so of the fourth book were excruicating to get through. If I hadn't looked ahead to see where a chapter with someone who I actually recognized began, I might have put it down and not kept trying to get through the beginning of it... And that is definitely true about Jordan... though who knows, maybe some of his characters will finally get killed in the final book when it comes out, now that they've got someone to finish it. (Though I hope Mat's not one of them. Or Tuon. Perrin can die though, I gave up on him quite some time ago, once he took up with Faile...) |

Not far. Arya has just tried to escape from Beric Dondarrion's outlaw fellowship. (Page 250 of 600) |

^ Well, she does that a lot it seems since her dad was killed. Escaping from this group or that group, I mean. You've still got a ways to go to the stuff I mentioned above, then. |

^ Yeah, and not a lot of time to read either until I get to my parents' place this weekend. And yes, Arya does get captured a lot. I'm surprised she's lasted this far and it's just now that she's revealed who she is, and only because an old Winterfell stablehand was part of the outlaws. |

^ I'm actually surprised with all her running about the countryside, with wolves roaming about, that she hadn't come across her direwolf Nymeria yet, since it's safe to presume that Nymeria didn't just hang about the Trident after Arya had chased her off way back in the first book... and they do keep talking about how many wolves there are in the area and the like... I mean, just to the point in the book where you're at, it's been over a book and half since her dad was killed, and she was forced to flee King's Landing... |

Nymeria is probably keeping a little distance. And I suspect that Arya sometimes in her sleep inhabits her direwolf (like Bran) and has kept her human self from other wolves. |

^ Oh I don't doubt that she does inhabit Nymeria. I think all of them (except Sansa) has at one time or another in the books. I'm just curious to see how Nymeria is going to treat Arya when they do finally get back together, 'cause the last time they were physically together, Arya was the one who drove her off (granted, Arya had a good reason for doing so, but still, will Nymeria see it that way?)... |

Okay, I got to mention this one brief bit from the fourth book...
I doubt that will mean anything to you, KTR, but what do you think, Rigil? Do you think it's a bit of a tip of the hat or something to Robert Jordan (whose real last name was Rigney)? That was the first thing that popped into my head upon reading those two lines... |

Undoubtedly a tip of the hat, IMO. And a nicely done one too... |

I wish that there weren't so many of these chapters which are from the POV of people we barely know in this book... it gets kind of annoying when he doesn't even bother to give the name of the person whose POV it is at the start of the chapter, but instead just calls them stuff like "The Kraken's Daughter" or "The Soiled Knight". What's wrong with just saying 'Asha' or 'Ser Arys' instead of getting cutesy with the titles? I'm about a quarter of the way through it at this point... on the up side, Arya finally does something other than run around the Trident and river lands, getting captured and escaping, in this book. |

Hmm... I glanced at whose POV all the remaining chapters are for the remainder of the book, and you guys might be disappointed some. 'Cause there is not one chapter from the POV of the three "main" characters from the previous three books... that's not to say that they don't appear (I know that one of them does, at least), but just that there is no chapter from their POV. |

I'm getting the feeling reading this book that it is mostly a transitional book in the series, with those who were important in the first three books for the most part taking the back seat while the author introduces new characters that are going to be important for events later on. As well as getting everyone into place to set up those later events... |

Didn't get much read today, I'm only a little past page 500 right now. It's still a hard to get through the chapters that are for this or that character that we've barely met or heard of (and are unlikely in some cases ever to be heard from again, because it's clear that they're there solely for the purpose of moving along other events in the story and won't have much impact in the big picture otherwise). At least he is, for the most part, spreading those out between chapters about the characters we do know now... |

Nearly finished now, just six more chapters to go (140 pages), which I should have finished before I go to bed tonight. I am pretty sure that Cersei is wrong about one thing that she fears greatly (it's sort of a theme throughout this book in her chapters), and possibly also about a second thing as well, and that's she going to be very surprised at some point when she finds out how wrong she is... ETA: Not too bad, it's only a little after 12:30 in the morning, and I'm done with the book. There's a note at the end from the author explaining why certain characters don't appear in this book. Basically, he said, that he wrote so many chapters that he realized that the book was too long. He thought about dividing the book halfway through, but didn't think that would be fair, so instead he took the chapters focusing on certain characters and stuck them in this book, and the chapters about the others will be in the next book (and therefore will cover the same time period as this book did). |

Say, did you guys see the little pewter figurines of characters from this series that are now on sale? Ice and Fire figurines There's Jamie, Cersei, Melisandre, Loras Tyrell, Sandor Clegane and Jon Snow, as well as four (unnamed) brothers of the Night Watch. They're also planning more of the little figures should these sell well. |

Say, I was poking around Amazon this morning, and I saw that they finally have the fifth book in series listed for pre-sale. It's called A Dance with Dragons, and it's due out on 30 September. Click on the link to Amazon's site if you want to read an excerpt from the book... |

Ha... Amazon had this board game, based on the novels for sale... it's sort of an alternate version of Risk, from the sound of it, with a few other things thrown into the mix... Too bad I don't have anyone that'd play it with me, else I'd get it. |
