Yup, I finally got some time. :) Still may be more to add in other sections, but I'm still waiting on some responses. |

When I first started building this site I expressed an interest in having a picture background with the text being in semi-transparent boxes so you could actually read it, but I lacked the skill, so my solution was to simply put a semi-transparent filter over the background image itself. Jedikatie has been doing some work on her own website though, and has been experimenting with the kind of thing I was talking about, and she seems to have found a way to successfully accomplish it. So, I was wondering that if I went ahead and did it, what text color would be the best for everyone's eyes to read. After all, some of these stories are rather long, and I don't want anyone to get tension headaches from straining their eyes as they try to read the content on my site. So, to that end I have three samples here for you to look at. Sample 1, Dark yellow text Sample 2, light yellow text Sample 3, white font Another thought I had was to try making the text background a different color (like white or some other light color) with black text, but if you have some other ideas for colors, or think I should leave well enough alone, don't be afraid to tell me. ;) |

I prefer sample 2. It fits the other colours of the page. But I don't know how tiring it might me, if it is... |

I really don't suggest using a black font on white text on top of that background. If you want to see what that looks like (with the transparency set at 80% and a bit of padding around the text so it doesn't go all the way to the edges) click here... I think you'd cause more eyestrain with that than you would with using the dark background and a lighter shade on top of it. The transparency value can be altered for the different pages--making the transparency less (by increasing the value from where it's set up to about 85%--it's useless to go as high as 90% because it no longer appears semi-transparent at that point), which would bring out the font more if you want... ETA: If you want a different, lighter shade as the semi-transparent background, I'd suggest something like this. It's not as glaring as the white is against the orange/brown background, yet you can still read the black text on it. Edited by Jedikatie, 18 Jan 2009, 18:13.

I really prefer dark text on a light background. When I write, I keep my word processor at pale gray background with dark, dark red for main text and navy blue for emphasized text. It works for me with minimal eyestrain. Either that or pale gray with plain black test. Light text on a darker background blinds me and gives me a headache in short order. So badly in fact, that I sometimes have to cut and paste a long web page into OpenOffice before I can read it comfortably. |

As you can tell by the dates I have them listed as being added to the site, these have both been a long time in coming. Apologies to the authors for the long delay in getting the work they submitted up on the site. New Stories Added: - Enterprise section - The Briar Patch - Chapter 7, by Dinah In the near future, both GoF and Foundations may be changing hosting, depending on how things pan out. I don't have much for internet access yet, so while the submission email address displayed on the website won't work, another one I set up a while back through the TrekOnline domain still does: guardian[at]trekonline[dot]org. Remember, you have to replace [at] and [dot] with the appropriate symbols. Edited by Captain X, 29 May 2009, 07:59.

Maybe this is an old problem, but I noticed that when there should be "" or ' it instead shows ì î and í. I also saw an ë somewhere. So T'Pol would show up as TíPol. |

^ Nope, not an old problem, I know it wasn't doing that to me a few weeks ago when the latest updates were added to the site. I'm guessing that the pages need a charset listed in order to fix that problem, because it seems to be affecting only the two single and double quotation marks on the stories--or at least those stories where the quotes were the curved ones to begin with instead of the straight ones... That means a line of code added to the php file for the site. If that doesn't fix it, then it means going through and changing everything manually with the replace feature, since it seems to be uniform as far as which quote mark is replaced by what symbol... but that would be a bit more time consuming. |

It's probably because I uploaded it from my Dad's Mac. It did that to my FND site when I was messing with it one summer. I won't be able to fix it until fall. |
