Just watched 3:10 to Yuma with Christian Bale (one of the best actors currently in the business) and Russell Crowe. Fantastic flick. As someone whose always like westerns (heck, I'm currently playing in a Deadlands roleplaying game on Friday nights, and that's just a western with zombies and magic), it was nice to see a good western for a change. Crowe is remarkably believable as a charismatic outlaw and, unsurprisingly, Bale is magnificent in his role as a rancher intent on seeing the outlaw to a train. Good gunfights, good acting. Four out of five stars.

Forgot to mention, last week I watched The Last Legion which was, ostensibly, a pseudo-King Arthur movie. To be perfectly frank, it sucked. A lot. It was so paint-by-numbers and formulaic that it hurt. The guy who played Vorenus in Rome was this silly, over-the-top villain and I couldn't take him remotely seriously. The love interest for the Main Character (not Arthur) followed the standard Hollywood template in these sort of movies in that she was a sword-wielding fiend. And the editing in this movie was atrocious.

Plot? Oh, right. See, this kid is the last heir to the real "Caesar" of Rome and these barbarians attack and seize Rome without adequate explanation how they managed to accomplish this (in the wrong year, no less). One moment, everything is hunky dory, then BAM! The barbarians have sacked the city and killed the guards. The boy is exiled to some island 'cause the Merlin wannabe (played by a horribly miscast Ben Kingsley) convinces the barbarian king that, to kill the kid is to create a martyr. Alexander Siddig, who looked pretty bored in this, was a representative for the Eastern Emperor over in Constantinople and sends his bodyguard to help rescue the kid along with the surviving leader of the "Caesar's" bodyguard unit. Imagine my utter lack of surprise when Siddig's bodyguard turns out to be some sort of ass-kicking Xena type, though clearly from India (based on appearance and accent.) They rescue the kid (after the kid finds some nifty and really shiny sword that is way period inappropriate that was supposedly the sword of Gaius Julius Caesar), then flee to England to regroup the Last Legion (called the 9th, I think). For some reason, they end up fighting a local warlord (who looked like a crappy D&D game reject). The last battle scene was pretty lame and resulted in the kid throwing the sword away (in disgust, I guess) and getting stuck in stone. This kid later basically becomes Uther.

Seriously, the movie kind of reeked. I was reminded of many bad D&D games I've participated in throughout the years, where the bad guys are bad guys simply for the expediency of the plot and so the Heroes know who are the villains. The whole thing was one cliche after another, and I was surprised and distressed that the very crappy Pirates of the Caribbean 3 was far superior to this dross.

One star out of five (and only one 'cause they actually mentioned there being an Eastern Empire.)

The only Arthurian one. I have a buttload of other DVDs (like all of the Star Wars movies, the entire run of Farscape including PKW, most of B5, etc.)

Caught Jumper today. For the most part, it's fairly forgettable fluff, but the teleporting throughout is pretty neat. The "hero" (Hayden Christensen) isn't much of a hero, and they resort to some cliches for the plot to move forward. Overall, though, it's a fun popcorn flick that probably won't hurt or help anyone's career.

You know, whenever I saw the commercials for this movie, I was reminded of an old show called "The Tomorrow People" which consisted of a bunch of kids who were "the next evolutionary step for humanity" that could teleport anywhere in the world, with a few other abilities (like telepathy), except they couldn't harm anyone...

Even though it's got Samuel Jackson in it Jumper doesn't appeal to me, especially at 9 bucks a ticket now. I'll probably catch when it comes on tv in three years or less.

Vantage Point looks interesting though. The one with Dennis Quaid and Sigourney "Ripley" Weaver.

Saw Vantage Point tonight. Sigourney Weaver didn't have as big a part as I thought she would. It was really good movie. It's one you have to pay attention to. It goes back and forth. It's got a good HOLY CRAP moment in it, at least for me it did. It all gets tied up at the end.

Just watched Shoot 'Em Up thanks to Movies on Demand. It's hysterical! Insane gun-fu stuff that simply wouldn't (realistically) work, but with some of the most original gunfighting action scenes that I've ever seen. This movie never takes itself seriously and that's what makes it so much fun.

Plot? Oh, right. It starts with Clive Owen's character that the bus stop when a pregnant lady runs by. She is pursued by a psycho and Clive grimly gets involved (leading to the first of many insane action sequences). He basically delivers the baby during the gunfight, kills a couple more guys, and escapes with the baby after mom is killed. Then, he takes the baby to a lactating hooker he knows (played by the always gorgeous Monica Belluci), which then leads to another crazy gunfight. Later, he and the hooker have sex, during which a gunfight takes place. And then, there's a skydiving shoot out scene that cracked me up.

Seriously, if you like mindless violence that doesn't take itself seriously (hmmm...maybe this should be considered an Action-Comedy), this movie is well worth checking out. Heh. I'm still snickering at some of the silliness...

So, I got Justice League: The New Frontier in today from Amazon. To preface, I forgot that I pre-ordered this a while back, but was pleasantly reminded when it arrived (along with my DVD of 3:10 to Yuma, the first western I've ever bought ... yeah, I liked it that much).

This DVD was based on an absolutely fantastic mini-series interpretation of the DC Universe that was set in the 1950s and 1960s, and to my delight, the movie is just as good. Admittedly, they had to cull a lot of stuff and change some more - there's a sequence in the beginning of the comic version that is completely absent, and there's a bit more Batman in the DVD than in the original comic - but overall, it's an awesome story.

Primarily, this is Hal Jordan's story (voice acting by David Boreanz). Jordan, you see, is a pilot who flew in Korea but has something of a pacifist streak. A lot of people think that he's a coward because of this streak, but that's not the case at all. By the end of the movie, he's finally become Green Lantern ... and I'm reminded again why a Green Lantern movie would kick everybody's ass if done right.

At any rate, there's this evil entity known as the Center that is planning on wiping out all life on Earth because of how much it is afraid of humanity. They set this fear up rather nicely in the beginning of the story as an unseen character writes and draws the story of the Center right before committing suicide. Yep, you read that correctly. The unseen artist/writer finishes, grabs a pistol and shoots himself. It's an indication that this is not necessarily for the kids and there are other examples, like after Hal Jordan gets shot down in Korea and gets involved in fisticuffs with a Korean (or, more likely, a Chinese) soldier; Jordan eventually gets his pistol in place and shoots the other guy in the head.

For the most part, I really like the character designs but that's not a surprise since I loved the original comic too. Wonder Woman, for example, is taller in this than Superman is (and she's voiced by Lucy Lawless which works beautifully.) The feel of the art is more Silver Age than not, but it makes perfect sense.

And the Bat totally rules. There's a scene in here in which he intimidates the crap out of the Martian Manhunter (who is pretty much Superman-class in power levels) with just a couple of lines. Tres cool.

So, if you like super hero comics, this movie is definitely worth checking out.

Is that the one they've been advertising on TV the last couple of weeks or so? I admit, it looked interesting to me just from the commercial if it was and I was thinking about getting it.

OfCourse he intimidates the Crap out of him, He's The Batman. Its kinda in his Job discription. :guffaw: God I loved that scene!
Who wouldnt be in Awe, an or intimidated by him,,,Here's a mere Mortal real to honest Human being taking on a possessed Cult who are armed, An he's kickin the Crap out of them with his bare Hands. An they dont even put a Scratch on him. Then when they Next Meet, Not only Cant Martian ManHunter Read Batman's Mind, But the Batman Just lets him know he knows how to stop him if need be, On top of letting him know he isnt impressed with his "Newspaper clippings". :guffaw:

B) Still the coolest Superhero Ever.

I love this bit from Wikipedia on Batman
Quote:

Unlike many superheroes, Batman has no superpowers and instead relies on "his own scientific knowledge, detective skills, and athletic prowess."[73] Batman is physically at the peak of human ability in dozens of areas, notably martial arts, acrobatics, strength, and escape artistry. Intellectually, he is just as peerless; Batman is one of the world's greatest scientists, engineers, criminologists, and tacticians, as well as a master of disguise, often gathering information under the identity of Matches Malone. He is regarded as one of the DC Universe's greatest detectives. Rather than simply outfighting his opponents, Batman often uses cunning and planning to outwit them. In Grant Morrison's first storyline in JLA, Superman describes Batman as "the most dangerous man on Earth," able to defeat a team of superpowered aliens all by himself in order to rescue his imprisoned teammates.

I even liked the movies Explanation for Him to change his look, an to take on a Side Kick. It made sence.
 But I liked the Darker look at the begining, It fit better.

:rolleyesrequest: An I still beleave Batman should of Never taken on a sidekick/needed one.

Ive gota say Ive never been much of a Fan of the Green Lantern before. :rolleyesrequest: Super powers coming from a Ring sounds extreamly dorky to me.
But I really liked this Hal Jordan.

They were all done amazingly well. Even Wonder Women being Freakishly Big. That was one Big Chick.

Did you see the preview on the DVD For "Batman Gotham Knight"?
Looks interesting. Suppossed to be six stories that take place Between Begins, an Dark Knight. An Kevin Conroy is voicing Batman in one of the six stories.

I can't answer that as I've barely watched any television in the last month or so. This week, I watched the Sarah Connor Chronicles and Jericho. Beyond that, the only time the TV has been on has been when I'm watching a DVD or an On-Demand movie.

In Grant Morrison's first storyline in JLA, Superman describes Batman as "the most dangerous man on Earth," able to defeat a team of superpowered aliens all by himself in order to rescue his imprisoned teammates.

I actually read that comic and it kicked ass. The White Martians in question were absolutely terrified of him, and the scene in question had their leader screaming that he was just one man while Supes was under the influence of some Red-K. Kal smirked and reflected that the Bat was the most dangerous man alive.

Related to that, Mark Millar put out a comic called Wanted for Image Comics (the upcoming Angelina Jolie movie you might have seen the previews for is loosely based on that comic) where the Villains from back in the day rose up and totally fraked over the Heroes. The villains now run the world secretly, having killed or utterly defeated all heroes. (It's an ... interesting comic, but doesn't have a particularly sunny disposition.) Anyway, they capture these two people who are obviously supposed to be Adam West and Burt Ward with the implication that they were Batman and Robin before the villains "remade" the world and left the everyone convinced that they were just two actors who played a role. Sayeth the psycho villain in this comic before they whack the two out of shape and amnesiac "heroes":

You were the scariest man alive one time.  Can you believe that?  The scariest man alive, and all they'll remember you for is the corny jokes and those silly nylon tights.

I found that an amusing, if accurate, vision of how the Bat would actually be...

Yeah, I generally agree with you there. I don't much like that later look, but since they were effectively transitioning into a Brighter Age, it made a little bit of sense that they approached it in that fashion.

I beg to disagree with you there. But to each their own. I've always thought that a Green Lantern movie, if done right, would be awesome. It's more science fiction than a lot of other stuff, but if approached correctly, it could be wicked cool, especially with today's FX abilities. And yeah, I really liked this incarnation of Hal.

Yeah, I saw that preview and I'm still trying to figure out whether I'm excited about it or not. I would be interested in seeing the Anime version of Batman, 'cause that could be awesome. Mostly though, I just want to see The Dark Knight, not an animated movie about him...

Yeah, it was the same movie. They showed a commercial for it during the last 15 minutes or so of Stargate: Atlantis (which I happened to be watching because it was one of Connor's episodes). Maybe when I get the wiper blades for my car, I'll look and see how much the store's charging for it as well...

Rigel, Green Lantern. I go back to the 40's when the Green Lantern was born. Had a different look to him then. Got his power by holding his ring up to an old lantern that glowed Green. Course that was the Golden Age of Comic Book Heros. Green Lantern being one of the best. also Green Arropw, Hawkman (had these big damned wings strapped on his back.) Others, too many to list or even remember. Many would come and go so fast that they only had a few issues.

One thing. Many of them had a Side Kick who was usualy a teen ager.
