Not to this extent it isn't normal, which is probably why its so jarring. It also goes to the delivery by the actress - the first time it comes out, she's not in her (silly) costume and has been, otherwise, pretty cute (albeit with a psycho for a dad), so it's a "huh?" But when she's in "costume" the foul mouth is actually pretty funny. And that's not even taking into account Cage's Adam West Batman voice impersonation, which is almost as funny. |

^^ Wrong thread, dude. So, yesterday, I went to a matinee showing of Iron Man 2 and it rocked as hard as the first one. Dialogue was sharp and witty, the action was pretty solid, and the actors themselves were all fun. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they worked the SHIELD stuff into this movie and the nods to both the upcoming Captain America and Thor movies was really cool. The very last scene in the movie - after the credits, like the Nick Fury one in the first IM - was very, very cool to an old school Marvel comics fan like me. Spoiler: click to toggle All in all, it makes more eager to see the next installments (Captain America, Thor, and then, of course, the Avengers.) I only hope they can maintain this level of quality. Mickey Rourke was pretty good as "Whiplash" (Ivan something), although I'm sure actual Russians would laugh at his dialogue in that language, and if I had one complaint, it would be that Sam Rockwell ("Justin Hammer", a Stark rival) was kind of wasted as almost pure comedy relief; I recently watched the awesome "Moon" with him in it, so I'm hoping Hammer will be back in the inevitable Iron Man 3 as more of a pronounced villain. Heck, they even worked in the suitcase power suit from the comics, something I always thought was utterly ridiculous, but it totally worked. If you liked the first one, then I strongly recommend checking Iron Man 2 out. I give it a solid 4 out of 5. |

I saw Iron Man 2 also yesterday. It was a fun two hours. All the actors were great. Stayed to the end and saw Thor's Hammer. Since I never read the comic are they staying close to the stories in the comics about Iron Man and how SHIELD came to be? |

Not really. If anything, this is coming across as closer to the Ultimate line of comics, which was basically a reboot of the "universe" to take into account modern sensibilities and themes - the first arc of the Ultimates series (which was the new version of the Avengers) would make an awesome first Avengers movie because the bad guy was ... the Hulk. It is the Ultimate-verse where we're first introduced to a black Nick Fury clearly based on Sam Jackson ... who then later plays Fury, which I find amusing. As far as I know, Howard Stark was never linked to SHIELD in any fashion, although that might have been retconned into the franchise. I do know that, for a while, Tony Stark was the SecDef under one of their fictional presidents, so I suspect that line was sort of a nod to that. |

Well, I'm probably going to go see Iron Man 2 tomorrow. I don't see any reason to go to the hospital if Dad does come home tomorrow like they're thinking, and if I don't go see it tomorrow, then I won't be able to go until next Monday... |

Just got back from seeing Iron Man 2. It was pretty cool. Not so sure about the whole 'create a brand new element' in your basement bit, even if Tony is a genius and has lots of equipment not readily available to everyone else--but what really bugged me most about it was that he tore down part of the walls and floor, set up the whole shebang and then managed to create the element in, like, a night... Did get a chuckle out of his use for Captain America's shield, though. And out of Happy taking so long to knock out the one guard at the door, while Natalie wiped out all the rest on her own and the look on his face when he turned around and saw what she'd done during his fight... |

I finally got to see Avatar. They showed it on the plane. Granted I was predisposed not to like it, but I felt it was rather underwhelming. Sure the effects were great, and the Na'vi did come to life, but I'm rather used to good CGI by now. Maybe the whole thing wasn't done justice on a small screen on the back of the seat in front of me, or that I really should've seen it in IMAX 3-D to get it all, but effects aren't enough to sustain a movie. And sure they made the female Na'vi rather pretty for a tall blue alien creature (with a cute blue bum), but I prefer the real Zoe Saldana. The story was all too simplistic and predictable. The term "Dances with Wolves in Space" is a very apt description. And I'm so sick of this "noble savage" tripe, as if we'd all be better off living in caves or trees or floating mountains or whatever. Thanks, but no thanks, I like my indoor plumbing too much. Living comfortably in the nature is a fantasy. As Thomas Hobbes said, that kind of pre-civilization life is "nasty, brutish and short". And James Cameron's hypocrisy is staggering. In order to portray this paradise world he has created, he is using the very latest our technological development has to offer. Maybe I'm weird or cynical or bad but I didn't really feel much when I saw it. It didn't move me and at times I felt even bored. Oh, well... |

They showed a really bad movie on TV the other day called The Initiation of Sarah, which was about some good and evil witches at sororities. The only reason why I tuned in was that Summer Glau  was in it. She was easily the prettiest girl in the flick, but for some reason she was supposed to be the mousy sister, that is until the evil sorority witches re-made her. Puh-leeze! |

/\ I barely survived Initiation of Sarah and only because of Summer. You should probably watch another Summer TV crap "Mamonth". It a little more watchable and also has Tom Skerritt |

Well, I finally got around to watching the Pixar movie, Up, tonight. It wasn't bad, though I doubt I'd be watching it repeatedly. It was a nice message for everyone, though, not just kids--basically the message was "just because one adventure ends, doesn't mean you can't start another." The old man, Carl, had fallen love with this girl (Ellie), who had an adventurous spirit when they were kids, and they ended up getting married. There were ups and downs in their lives (all of this is in the first five to ten minutes of the movie), including not being able to have kids of their own, and Carl ends out outliving Ellie. He's just trying to get away from everyone when the Wilderness Explorer kid (Russell) ends up on his house to which he's attached all these balloons so he can get away from the city and the people who want to stick him in a home. After Russell and Carl have a spat in South America, Carl is looking through Ellie's old "my adventure book" and discovers something at the back that he hadn't noticed before: pictures of the two of them together, with one last message from Ellie, thanking him for the adventure and telling him to go find a new one. That turns around Carl's sour outlook, and he goes on to rescue Russell, the bird and the dog from an (extremely, extremely) old explorer that he used to idolize way back when he was Russell's age, and then becomes a sort of grandfather figure to Russell at the very end. |
