The Beginning - A Look at the Rough Draft of Episode I You know what's really sad? This early version simply sounds better than the filmed version. *shakes head* |

I scanned through it, and while better, I still like the versions we came up with here much better. One f Lucas's huge failings with the movies, and you can see it start with RotJ, is that he turned movies that were basically for young adults and grown-ups into kiddie shows. Hence Ewoks and Jar-Jar (and his people), not to mention Anikin being introduced to us as a little kid who goes on to save the day. It's like Spy Kids but Star Wars. :rolleyesrequest: Anyway, it also doesn't surprise me at all that Episodes II and III were developed more in the art department than anywhere else, because it really shows. |

So at bingo tonight, when I walked in and took off my sweater (which I was wearing because I knew I sit right underneath the vent that the air conditioning come out of so I was going to be freezing before the night was over), this really annoying lady whom I never talk to that sits at the table behind me saw that I was wearing a Star Wars shirt. She kept going to me, while I was talking to other people, "Did you see 'Clone Wars' yet? Did you see 'Clone Wars' yet?" I was trying to talk to Mary, the lady who sits next to me, who is the aunt of my team leader Mike, and to David, the guy who sits at the table behind where my mom sits, and they were talking to me. Anyway, she apparently got annoyed that I didn't answer her (well, she kept referring to me as 'Star Wars' and 'Hey you' and neither of those are my name), so she got up and trooped around so that I was facing her and then asked me again. I told her no, I didn't, because it'll be on for free next month on Cartoon Network, so why would I waste my money at the theater on a cartoon that's going to be airing in a few weeks on TV? After all, it's only the first three episodes of their new animated series, strung together because Lucas thought it should be on a movie screen. I don't think she liked that answer. But it's the truth--why would I spend money on it, when I know that the movie will undoubtedly be shown when the series starts as three separate episodes? I can't stand that lady... she's really loud and obnoxious and is the sole reason why I started taking my ipod to bingo and turning the music up to the max, so I wouldn't have to listen to her for four and half hours, because you can hear everything she says halfway across the gym... |

I've been reading The Making of Star Wars, a book I picked up in London, these past few days. It's about the making of the first SW movie and quite interesting behind the scenes information that hasn't been written about before. Anyway, I found it rather revealing that George Lucas even back then had an intense dislike for writing and plotting. His idea was originally just about specific scenes and the general atmosphere. He really had no idea what kind of story it would be. He searched and searched to find a story that would fit his vision. That explains all the influences from other movies, like Kurosawa's, and why he so faithfully stuck with Joseph Campbell's hero mythology once he found it. I'm surprised he even managed to get such a good story as the first movie is. But then it took him three years to write it. He even decided to kill off Kenobi late in production - after they had wrapped filming in Tunisia. That also explains why TESB was so good - he let others write it. He really should've let others write the prequels as well. I read somewhere that there actually wasn't much written for the prequels, and that those movies where mostly developed right from visuals, storyboards, production paintings and things like that. Only then did he sit down to try and write a story that fit all those visuals. |

I have some bad news. Ever thought that that midi-chlorian nonsense was something George Lucas conjured up only for the prequels? 'Fraid not. I've just read the book The Making of Star Wars by J.W. Rinzler, and there's a section at the end about some of the background info on the characters that he had communicated back in 1977. Here's an excerpt about the Force (page 441):
Also, there is a background about Threepio's life. Most of it turned out to be used, but I found this line interesting (page 435):

Well, I went out and bought the first three of the X-Wing novels tonight. Partly because they didn't have what I wanted at either of the bookstores I went to, and partly because I'd been meaning to read them for a while now... |

^ Must have been given to him by a fan who preferred Han shooting first rather than Greedo. Or else he was in a crowd of fans who preferred that scenario than his reimagined version... |

As for the truth of that statement, I have no idea... |

^ Seems kind of ridiculous to me. If it's okay for Greedo to shoot first and then for Han to shoot back in order to get a PG rating, then what's wrong with Han simply shooting first? Greedo's intent to shoot Han was there in either case, it's just a matter of Han being quicker in the original film than Greedo was... And it really makes Greedo look like a lousy bounty hunter if he can't hit a target that's sitting right across the table from him if he did shoot first. |

You don't have to tell me. I'll never understand how those ratings systems work, especially the ones you have in the US. |

Not really a thought, but I happened to see in the TV listings that they're showing The Empire Strikes Back tonight on Spike TV at 9 pm EDT... ETA: And they're showing Star Wars right now... Edited by Jedikatie, 20 Oct 2008, 16:50.

Well, apparently Lucas has decided that he needs more money, because he's re-released both the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy on 6-disc sets (you only get the three movies in each trilogy in the 6 discs, however, not all six). And surprise, surprise--after he swore up and down that he'd never, ever release the original trilogy movies on DVD again the way they were back in the '70s and '80s before his tinkering with them, three of the discs show his 'altered' versions from the '90s, and three of them have the original versions. Apparently both sets are being released tomorrow (this is the link for the original trilogy set at Best Buy). They're supposed to be "enhanced widescreen versions for 16x9 TV"... Not sure what the other three discs for the prequel trilogy are supposed to have, unless he's tinkered with those already... |
