I saw this article earlier over at Yahoo:

Doesn't surprise me too much. Before I stopped reading comics, I was aware that the guy in charge of Marvel - Joe Quesada - hates the Parker/MJ relationship. I'm pretty sure he's behind this stupid plot move. Given that I kinda grew up on those two being together (man ... has it really been 20 years?), I find this decision kind of stupid.

But then, I haven't read comics in a couple of years now...

I have never read any Spidey comics and only seen the first two movies. But I will say this; The reasoning behind the break-up seems to be the same kind of reasoning that Hollywood types uses when they perpetually carry on the "will they/won't they" thing for a pairing.

"I remember editors and editors in chief lamenting that a married Spider-Man was not where we want to be," Quesada says. "A married Peter Parker makes for a less interesting soap opera than a single Peter Parker going about his nerdy kind of life."

They seem to be unable to come up with stories about a couple as a couple. So maybe I should be thankful that we never got 7 seasons of ENT. Who knows what they'd have done to Trip and T'Pol?
