Well, I watched the DVD of The Hogfather I got from Amazon last week finally last night...

If you've read Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" novels, you definitely won't be disappointed. They've faithfully made the book into a three hour miniseries, and though it's been awhile since I last read this particular novel, from what I saw, they cut very little, if anything, of it.

The story centers around The Hogfather (think Santa Claus with tusks whose sleigh is pulled by a team of boars) and what would happen if people didn't believe in him.

It seems that the Auditors (of everything) want humanity to stop being so creative, making up stories for this or that natural phenomenon, and so they go to Ankh-Morpork, to the Guild of Assassins, to hire them to take out the Hogfather on Hogswatch Eve. Lord Downey (played by David Warner, who was the shifty manservant of Cal in Titanic) accepts the job, and assigns one of the students to the case, since he really doesn't believe it's possible to kill an anthropomorphic representation.

Which brings us to the main baddie of this tale--Mr. Teatime (pronounced "Tay-ah-time-ay"), a rather odd looking fellow with mismatched eyes who talks in rather breathy manner, who, when asked by Lord Downey how he'd take out the Hogfather, replies that he's given the matter quite a bit of thought (along with how to take out the Soul Cake Duke, the Tooth Fairy and Death himself).

So Teatime, with a small band of somewhat willing compatriots sets out to kill the Hogfather... leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

Meanwhile, Susan, who happens to be Death's granddaughter (even though she's mostly human) and has picked up a few of the more peculiar family traits, like being able to walk through walls and see things she shouldn't be able to see, is working as a governess and gets involved after discovering Death masquerading as the Hogfather, in the hopes of keeping the belief in the Hogfather alive, even though Teatime has succeeded in getting rid of him at that point.

There's some highly amusing scenes (especially if you've read the book) spread throughout, like when the Watch is called into the department store to arrest the Hogfather (Death) because he's "giving away presents for free to the kiddies" and is an imposter. Considering it was Corporal "Nobby" Nobbs (the only human on Discworld who has to carry a piece of paper around stating that he was, in fact, human, which is signed by Lord Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork) and Constable Visit-The-Infidels-With-Explanatory-Pamphlets (an Omnian, who are bunch of religious fanatics) who answered the call, needless to say, Death did not get arrested...

And of course, the Senior Staff of wizards from Unseen University are also woven into the tale. Along with Hex, the "thinking machine" created by the student wizards under Ponder Stibbons (think a grown-up Harry Potter, minus the scar, and you've got a good idea what he looks like) in the High-Energy Magic building. Hex even has a label (shaped the same at the Intel label on computers) which says "Anthill inside"... The wizards are always fun, and sometimes you just have to feel sorry for poor Ponder, who seems to have more sense than the rest of the Senior Staff put together at times...

Everything turns out all right in the end, and it makes for an interesting twist on the usual holiday special...

From Sci Fi Wire's news briefs:

Quote:

Warner Brothers is focused on releasing four films based on DC Comics superheroes in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman and two movies focusing on other DC characters, The Wall Street Journal reported; movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

I know someone who'd be thrilled if they'd make the Wonder Woman movie...

Okay... I don't think I ever would have pictured this one:

The Fly Mutates into Opera

And I presume that they keep referring to the 1980's version of the movie, since they seem to be forgetting that Vincent Price played the scientist in the original movie...

:vulcan: I was listening to the radio and some Indian Bollywood studio was trying to rip off the Harry Potter movies with one titled Hurri Patarri and the Hollywood studio put a stop order on their making this movie for a second time in a yearand a half. The studio who makes the Harry Potter movies is threatening to sue them for copyright violations.J.k. Rowling is not happy about it either.

They had this listing of the Historic Box Office Bombs over at Yahoo tonight.

Be sure and look at the cost to produce #13 (ZYZZYX Road) and its total box office take. It's pretty bad when the guys writing the aritcle have to put a note next to the box office amount to tell you that yes, you did read it right...

Ah, come on. Battlefield Earth was the funniest damned movie I've ever seen! Me and my buddies actually watch it whenever we can because it's so unbelievable hysterical ...

What? Oh ... it was a comedy ... huh ...

And I love the Baron Munchausen movie. It's just fun...

Well, the only movie on the list that I've actually seen is Howard the Duck, and I can understand completely why it's on this list. Thankfully I only remember a few bits and pieces of it now...

I know that I did want to see Baron Munchausen at the time it came out, but for whatever reason we didn't go.

Now I'm curious about what ZYZZYX Road is about!

Of those disasters I've seen Cleopatra, Cutthroat Island and Howard the Duck.

Apparently that ZYZZYX Road thing is out on DVD if you really wanted to watch it...

I can't remember honestly if I've seen Cleopatra or not. I might have seen it when I was a kid on TV sometime.

As a history buff I naturally had to see Cleopatra. I even have it on DVD.

Cutthroat Island wasn't very good.

And I watched Howard the Duck because I had a thing for Lea Thompson back then. Still, it was a bad movie.

I saw at Dark horizon movie site that Japan is banning the Dark Knight from being shown saying it's too dark and violent and it's a bad movie quoting the article I read. That's ironic when you consider all the sex ,nudity and violence they show in their Animae cartoons. :rolleyesrequest:

Oh, I hope that this is true...

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, part three

My favorite movie was the original Ghostbusters (which I saw only three times in the movie theater, and once during free movie night at college, but about 100 times otherwise between TV and the videotape of the movie I bought--it was the first movie on tape I bought, in fact, after we finally got a VCR in the fall of 1987--during my senior year of high school. I can still recite almost line for line the entire movie...

I know, I'm being silly and there are plenty of other movies out there that are better and more popular. But it was my favorite--I even dressed up as a Ghostbuster the year it came out to go trick-or-treating, even though I was 13 years old by that time.

And they've got Bill Murray to finally agree to be in the movie. :cloud9: It just wouldn't be the same without him...

Out of all those movie flops I saw Cutthroat Island and Howard the Duck. I know I saw CI in the theater with a friend and she slept though most of the movie. HD I saw way back in grade school probably during the last week of school where you don't do much. I remember very little about it. I just looked it up at IMDB and the actor who plays Captain Brass on CSI is this movie, it was one of his first roles.

 I think it would be nice if they could get back the original cast of Ghostbusters to film another movie. I was reading a list of alot movie remakes Hollywood wants to do with movies from the 70's and 80's. It seems like most of the studios are stuck in a rut when it comes to original movies and stories to make into movies.

Cannell confirms new Hero movie

The Greatest American Hero, that is... :) Hopefully it's better than the insipid "The Greatest American Heroine" pilot from the '80s, 'cause the only good part of that was the first 10 minutes or so, when the originals said goodbye...

I remember enjoying GAH when I was young. I wonder if it has held up if I were to watch it again today? I liked Culp's character and thought Connie Sellecca looked hot (she still does judging by that pic).
