Yes, I know that Robert Jordan died several months ago, while writing the last novel of this series. They had an article over at Sci Fi Wire today, though, about the final novel:

Sanderson to finish The Wheel of Time

I've never heard of this guy, personally, but it sounds like he understands just how daunting a task it's going to be to finish this book, even with the many notes, scenes, and recordings Robert Jordan left behind so someone else could finish it.

The final book in the series is called A Memory of Light and is scheduled to be published in the fall of 2009.

I looked up this Sanderson guy, and I still don't know anything about him. None of the books he's written were familiar to me...

So ... who do you think dies in the final book? As far as I'm concerned, Rand has to die for there to be any significant impact. Since Perrin was being set up as the "builder", I don't think he'll buy the farm (although I wouldn't have much problem with it if Faile kicked the bucket.) If Mat dies, I'm going to find some way to resurrect Jordan in order to have harsh words for him; I'm not all that enamored of Tuon, but I figure she survives so Mat can go to the Seanchan Empire with her and kick everyone's ass. I'm utterly indifferent to most of the female channeller characters so I could care less if Egwene, Nynaeve or Elayne die; I still like Aviendha though, even if she's been corrupted by the evil that is Elayne. Min needs to survive 'cause, frankly, she seems like the only female non-channeller in the lands...

And I loath the theory I've seen online that suggests that Rand "dies" but sort of body swaps with Logain. I'd much rather see Logain become a sort of joint-Amyrilin Seat with Egwene...

Well, I don't really care much for Perrin anymore, but that's largely because of Faile. Somehow I don't think they redeem him enough in this last book (even if Faile dies on the first page of it) for me to care one way or the other about him.

I think that if they kill Mat, then there's going to be a lot of very unhappy people. He's definitely the best character in the books, but I'm worried about the prophecy that's tied to him... Tuon I do like, just because she gave him such fits and starts, though with them off fighting on separate sides for now, I fear that they may end up having to fight each other. But I would like both of them to survive.

Rand should die, yes. He'll have served his purpose by bringing about the new age, and his story will be done. Though it might be an interesting twist if by winning, he ends out losing his ability to touch the One Power, and goes back to being just a farmer's son from Two Rivers... but I'd much rather have him die.

I can see one (or more) of the girls possibly also dying in the final battle with him. Especially if he and Nynaeve are using those statues that allow both halves of the One Power to be used together. Nynaeve should die as well, along with Elayne, though I fear that Elayne Trakand will survive. Birgette (sp?) will die.

Egwene--I don't know if she'll live or die. I would be neat to see something like you suggested, though. I think Aviendha would prefer to die in battle, but I think she might end up surviving...

Something I've noticed in the books is that, once the White Tower has touched them in any fashion, the female characters get incredibly annoying, the sole exception to this being Min. I dunno if maybe there's an Aes Sedai course "How to Be an Extraordinary Pain-In-The-Ass in Three Easy Steps" or something, but man!

It's even worse when the scene is from Mat's POV, but that's to be expected, I guess...

True, the majority of them do seem to be complete jerks after being there. But then the women in the stories (at least the way he writes them) seem to always think they know better than the men, even if they have never set foot at the White Tower... I mean, remember Nynaeve before she went to the Tower? She treated the guys like they were little kids and tried to boss them around even then...

It would be kind of neat if Min and Rand (if he does survive) end out together, though.

And it's really sad when I go through and read all the chapters from Mat's POV first then read the rest of the book (which is what I've done with the last two books).

And another article about the last book, this time they talked to the guy who was chosen to complete the series...

This is both exciting and worrisome.
Universal spinning 'Wheel of Time'
Quote:

Universal Pictures has acquired film rights to the late Robert Jordan's bestselling "The Wheel of Time" novel series in a seven-figure deal.

Adaptations of the fantasy tomes will begin with the first book in the cycle, "The Eye of the World."

Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon will produce for Red Eagle Entertainment, which published graphic novel adaptations of Jordan's books.

"The Wheel of Time" follows, among its dozens of characters, Rand al’Thor, the latest incarnation of a force for good called "The Dragon." Rand is born to fight an evil character called Shai’tan.

"Wheel of Time" books have sold 44 million copies worldwide and spawned computer, trading-card and role-playing games; a soundtrack; comicbooks; and numerous fan sites. The four most recent installments have reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

The property has been optioned before, notably in 2000, when NBC held the rights to make a miniseries based on "The Eye of the World."

Jordan died last year at 58, but the final book in the series is still set for publication in fall 2009, with fellow fantasy scribe Brandon Sanderson writing the novel’s conclusion from Jordan’s notes and tapes.

Worrisome, why?

Though I'll believe it when I see it when it comes to an actual movie, miniseries or whatever... I'm still waiting for the Dragonriders of Pern movie or show that was supposed to come out years ago.

Worrisome because the Studios have a history of thoroughly screwing up novels when they translate them to film. I can probably count on one hand the number of times a book to film resulted in something accurate, and I simply don't see how they could cram The Eye of the World into a two hour movie. If anything, they should do a number of mini-series with each novel being a four or five-hour movie.

Oh, yeah, it's going to get chopped to bits, no doubt about that. Even if they make it into a miniseries.

But as long as they don't sacrifice too much of Matt's story, however, I'd be happy. They're more than welcome to chop out Perrin and Faile's story, though. Blech. Or some of the stuff with the girls.

At a guess, though, it'll focus primarily on Rand and probably on the Forsaken... and everyone else's stories will be shoved off to the side or greatly diminished, even if each book was a miniseries done about the length of the North and South miniseries from the '80s (which was about 10-12 hours long)...

Speaking of WoT, they had this bit of news (as well as the bit you mentioned above) over at Dragonmount.com:

Dabel Brothers to produce graphic novels of entire Wheel of Time series

It says the first one will be released in December...

Alot of time when they do these movies they cut out so much of the story you don't recognize the characters you've read in a series like this .They make a real mess out them alot of the time.

Some teaser images from that comic series Katie mentioned of Lews Therin in front of the Forsaken (as he knew them) and then Rand in front of them in his era. I personally don't really like the look of Rand...

I think it's the expression on Rand's face that I don't like. I know the artist is just mirror imaging everyone from the top picture in the one below (and then altering the Forsaken to make them match how they appear in Rand's time), so the expressions are the same.

Do you suppose that's supposed to be Asmodean and Moghedien to either side of Lews and Rand, in the dark clothes?

Actually, I think it is Asmodean and Semirhage based on the description of her. From wiki:
Quote:

Taller than most men and well proportioned with long slender fingers. She is graceful and calm with dark eyes and dark skin. She enjoys the simple pleasure of needlework. Because Lanfear wears white, Semirhage wears black (although she would kill anyone who suggested it in her hearing).

Could be... I was blanking on the descriptions because it's been awhile since I read any of the books, other than I remembered vaguely that one of the women always wore black (as your quote pointed out).

That's something I suppose I could do this fall when work slows down again, reread the books. Or at least the bits concerning Mat (I don't think I could stomach reading about Faile and Perrin again)...
